Dreadful, inexcusable
By Brad Johnston
Barron's E-Z Grammar, by Dan Mulvey, 2002.
He looked high and low for his daughter, who had ridden off on her scooter. RIGHT.
The Wild Colonial Boy lost his life in the Australian outback because he had shot James McAvoy. WRONG.
She walked past the lions in front of the New York Public Library; she was looking for her husband who had ducked into a bar. RIGHT.
Sandra Petrosky, who had never baked anything before, won first prize in the baking contest. WRONG.
Before Paula Chabot taught Latin for several years, she had played soccer for a professional team. WRONG.
The lawyer, who had impressed the jury and who later won the case [comma] was later arrested for fraud. WRONG.
When Macbeth was told that his wife had died, he thought she should have waited for a more opportune time. WRONG.
2 right out of 7 = a grade of 29. Is that good enough for you? Not knowing what it is, it's amazing he got any right, but even a blind pig will find an acorn once in a while.
Awful. Dreadful. Inexcusable.
The Past Perfect: By the time something happened, something else had ALREADY happened. The Past Perfect is NOT used to show that one past event preceded another.
