Wish I had access to it 30yrs. ago

My eight year old eldest son (now 38) came home from school one day and asked what religion we are and if we believed in God. I told him his Mom was one religion and I didn't have one. "But do WE believe in God?" He asked. "Well, your Mom sort of does, but no..I don't believe in a god." I said. "Well, do I believe in God?" he queried. "That's something you'll have to decide for yourself when you're older." I assured him.
And that's pretty much where it ended. I wish I could have had access to David McAfee's book. It would have taken the discussion to a much more insightful level, if not then, then perhaps a year or so later. Beliefs, non-Belief, science, questioning, myth ... the roles that these things play in the varied aspects of our lives and culture are explored in an imaginative and fun way. While geared for the youngster, and speaking on their level, it doesn't come across as condescending, or judgmental.
To summarize, this books fills an important gap for the secular parent (or parents) who want to encourage free thought and independent evaluation and an understanding that thinking and questioning are valuable and valued qualities for children as well as adults.

Delightful. Insightful. I bought this book for my 10 year old daughter. We both enjoyed it. Even I learned something. :) Another exemplary David G. McAfee book to add to our collection.

Ambitious Undertaking

I sincerely admire the authors of The Belief Book for their obviously genuine desire to teach freethinking and question religion and cultural absolutes. They handle the challenging task with care and wit. I particularly like when the authors invite child readers to create their own gods (though I don't understand why the narrative voice praises the work that was not read by the authors; I hope they drop that technique in future books).
My serious critiques of the book are few but significant. Issues of gender and race "beliefs" should equally be questioned as part of our life of logic and the scientific method, so I particularly disapprove of the reference to the child reader as having been born of a happy "mother and father," the former of which is depicted like a doll opposite a video game controller. Children come from all sorts of family configurations, and the authors should know this and find more accurate and logical expression to validate the very foundational arguments of their book. Somewhat similarly, the tombstone signifying death should not have the racist slur name "Sum Yung Gai" on it. Question, gentleman, and think!
Despite these few but important problems, the book as a whole is engaging, charming, and useful for introducing the subject of deconstructing (denaturalizing) belief for readers young and old alike.
