A Clear Presentation of The Thermodynamic Theory

I used this book for a semester at the University of Maryland. I found the author's explanations clear and easy to follow. The section on entropy and how the author develops the theory based on quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics is very informative. I recommend reading the book. Many books on thermodynamics are more detailed and also complex, but the Gaskell book presents clear principles with examples.

Truly an awful book by a terrible author.

I don't doubt that Gaskell knows thermodynamics but I must say his ability to convey that knowledge in what is supposed to be an introductory book is just downright awful. I was forced to use this book in college and it was easily in the top two or three worst text books I've ever encountered. Gaskell has the unique ability to make a difficult subject like thermodynamics incomprehensible. If your professor is suggesting the use of this book, tell him to write his own because it couldn't possibly be any worse. I wouldn't give this book to my worst enemy.
