What Passed This Way?

This excellent field-guide reads like an introduction to Ichnology (the study of fossil tracks and traces). Written in a style that makes it accessible to just about all age groups, from pre-teens to adults. It gives the reader a first hand look at the terminology and methods used by paleontologist in the study of fossil traces. the track sites come in all sizes from tiny spider trails to truly huge migration walk-ways. Each track or trace has its own scientific name that may, or may not, be linked to a particular animal. Some of them are named after the discover or the location where they are found. The reader will find out what conditions contribute to the creation of this type of fossil. Some can be made in mud or sand along the shores of the sea or a lake, some in desert sand-dunes. Like any fossil, the odds against its preservation are high so any find we make is precious and needs to be treated accordingly. The author's approach is chronological: he takes you on a tour through time, from the earliest known tracks in the Cambrian period (about 500m YBP) to recent times (about 10t YBP). The book is profusely illustrated with color and b&w photos as well as numerous line-drawings by Judy Peterson. During the tour you might run into a few surprises and lots of fun facts that may encourage you to read other, more advanced, material. Lockley has written several previous books on this subject, a quick look on Amazon will show you most of them (try your local library too). Some time ago I read Dinosaur Tracks and Traces that Lockley co-authored with David D. Gillette in 1991, it was excellent but somewhat technical. If your at all interested in prehistoric life and fossil hunting then you may find this field-guide to be well worth your time. And, who knows, you may even be amazed as to what, or who, has walked this way before.
