About the Author

JON MILLER has 20 years of experience in the field of kaizen. He is the CEO of the Kaizen Institute Consulting Group. He was co-founder and CEO of Gemba Research before merging it with the Kaizen Institute. Jon is the author of numerous articles, and translated and edited Taiichi Ohno's Workplace Management as well as contributing to other McGraw-Hill Professional books, including Gemba Kaizen, Second Edition, and Kaizen in Logistics and Supply Chains.

MIKE WROBLEWSKI has more than 25 years of experience in industrial engineering, manufacturing management, and kaizen. He is a Director of the Kaizen Institute USA. Mike is a popular keynote speaker at national conferences, sharing his insights and experiences leading kaizen.

JAIME VILLAFUERTE has 20 years of experience in the strategic and tactical deployment of continuous improvement. He is a Lean Six Sigma Director at Jabil, Inc., where he leads the development and deployment of Lean Six Sigma transformation, reaching 165,000+ employees in 33 countries. Provides a great understanding of what Kaizen means to a culture.

Amazing book about the true power of kaizen. Not just the talk of events but the levels of involvement for the daily kaizen through relentless continuous improvement to tackling big projects via Project Kaizen, and can't forget Support Kaizen either. Getting into the importance of building people around learning, developing, and experimenting. Jon Miller, Mike Wroblewski, & Jaime Villafuetre provide great insight of providing examples at various organizations such as NUMMI, FastCap, ThedaCare, Vibco, & Virginia Mason MedicalCenter. I can't forget Kaas Tailored, as that was one of my favorite stories to read in this book. Such energy, eagerness, and drive for real kaizen.

What I can say I learned is that: " if no plan, no vision, and no standard in doing things right...then there is really no chance for kaizen". Also, engaging people, developing skills, the importance of PDCA and the 10 core kaizen beliefs. I like the illustration of traditional vs kaizen culture benchmarks, as i can relate to the struggles with traditional thinking. I've been around companies where kaizen was taught in a more traditional way with more of the attitude of a "project" and "done"...now "go kaizen elsewhere". What was missing is the deep understanding of how to drive daily kaizen and sustain it through a disciplined approach to developing people, being at the gemba, and understanding the leadership importance to support it. I know that I need to read through this book a couple of times to keep learning. So much helpful info in understanding kaizen culture. I plan to eventually read Gemba Kaizen.

This book is a good first step on addressing the cultural issues within the organization.

It addresses some issues with why Toyota need not be such a unique Lean organization, or that only the Japanese can be lean. This is valuable discussion for skeptical organizations.

There is some discussion on how to use some of the lean tools to solve for cultural transformation.

However, the book feels a little unfinished. Perhaps because it isn't something that can be neatly summed into a 9 step process just yet, it feels like we've been issued a challenge rather than a roadmap.

The mix of personal narratives and some scholarly work is good for those who've been at this for a while or for someone who may need to understand a little more before jumping into their first steps at lean.

Must to read

I highly recommend this book. It is a great material. It gives you a clear perspective of the foundations to build an adaptive culture. More than ever organizations need to reinvent itself to keep competitiveness and an adaptive culture is the way to achieve it. A difference of other books about lean that are focused just on the technics this book goes further to explain the rational of the kaizen culture. I am applying this book in my work in leadership development to improve employee engagement.
