Good Resource!

Love these short passages that are accompanied by teaching points which include both skills and strategies. Passages and follow-up questions are challenging, and just right to use for 3rd grade instruction. This gives me the opportunity to model my thinking on a short piece daily and has become an integral part of my reading program.

Moderately Useful

These daily activities have a very similar form to the workbooks of other grades. Because of this I am able to use them as differentiated warm-ups so that my below-level students are still getting work with similar skills during the first few minutes of class and my students won't be sensitive to the different material.

Some of the skills developed and some of the kinds of questions here are a little out of date and modern students will often have laughable answers to some of them. (For instance, the answer to any question that asks "What reference source would you look in to find..." is always answered with "The internet" in my class).

Still, these are a reasonably valuable, standardized tool.

The Ayurvedic diet is based on the concept of three "doshas": vata (air), pitta (fire), and kapha (earth). Each of us has a primary dosha that we can strive to maintain at a healthy balance, but which can cause problems if excessive. The book includes a questionnaire so readers can determine their own primary dosha and then look for recipes that will help them to maintain or reduce it for optimal health.

Recipes include modern interpretations of Indian cuisine (spicy paneer zucchini kabobs and mango and coconut kulfi), and Ayurvedic spins on vegetarian fare (sprouted barley rainbow pilaf and raw zucchini hummus). The book also includes yoga and breathing exercises that one can easily do at home or at work, full-color recipe photos, and information on sprouting/fermenting techniques and backyard gardening.

You are what you eat!

Let me just say right from the start that The Tastes of Ayurveda is more than just a cookbook. While the primary emphasis is certainly on the food and it's preparation, there is also a significant amount of information about Ayurveda itself, along with yoga exercises to facilitate your overall health.

The book starts out with helping you identify what sort of dosha predominates in your body. Basically, this is sort of a personality test to help you be more attuned with your body. There is a questionnaire for you do take to help you determine this. Ayurveda divides food into six tastes including sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. Each one effects our doshas differently. This cookbook helps you keep your doshas in balance using the whole, natural ingredients that are in these recipes.

The Tastes of Ayurveda includes lots of the basics you need to know before diving into these recipes. There is an extensive section on ingredients and terminology which is quite helpful. Each recipe is marked with a symbol to indicate which dosha it helps balance: Vata, Pitta, or Kapha. This makes it quite easy to skim through the book and find a recipe that would appeal to you on any given day. The cookbook is divided into traditional chapters like Breakfast, Appetizers, Soups, Sweets, etc. Many of the recipes include useful tidbits of information like what exactly is a wheat berry or what healing property a certain ingredient may have. There are also a few nice, colorful pictures scattered throughout.

The last 40 or so pages of the book include sample menus, yoga suggestions, information on cleansing and food guidelines for basic constitutional types. There is also an index to search by recipe name.

Overall, I think this is a very well put together cookbook/health primer to help you get started on the road to Ayurveda. You do have to be willing to try some new and exotic flavors along with some ingredients you may have never heard of before. You will find `traditional' recipes (like the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies) and some bean burritos but you will also find a few more exotic recipes like the Yellow split mung bean and spinach dal. There seems to be a nice balance though so I think most people will find things they enjoy.

I tend to be a person who eats what I'm in the mood for and not necessarily what my body tells me I need so I'm not sure how successful I would be at trying to design my diet on the principles of Ayurveda. I know I will enjoy these recipes, whether it helps balance my doshas or not!

This Book is AWESOME

I saw this book at Barnes and Nobel tonight...I bought it here on kindle books. But it is amazing. As a certified holistic nutritionist I am always looking for recipes. While this book does discuss the doshas and foods for healthy balance, it is really modern and not a traditional style Ayurvedic diet. So if your looking for something super authentic...you might not like this book as it has some Greek and Asian style recipes. If you like a more fusion approach and looking for some superfoods, smoothies, gluten free recipes, and over all just rockin information...you will enjoy this! Very nice layout and easy recipes.

Muscle men, midgets, socialites, circus performers and asylum inmates: in the 1950s and '60s, photographer Diane Arbus (1923-1971) cast her strong eye on them all, capturing them as no one else could. Her documentary-style photos of society's margin-walkers were objective and reverential, while she often portrayed so-called normal people looking far more freakish than the freaks. Her powerful work was well-received in its day. Arbus received Guggenheim Fellowships in 1963 and 1966 and was included in a major show at MOMA in 1967. But her work entered the realm of near-myth after her 1971 suicide.

Posthumously cast as everything from patron saint of the underdog to a crass exploiter of the mentally challenged, Arbus has curiously never had a large retrospective until the show Revelations was organized by Arbus' family and SF MOMA. The accompanying catalogue is an oversized, sumptuous, beautifully printed tome. Arbus's frank treatment of her subjects and her faith in the intrinsic power of the medium have produced a body of work that is often shocking in its purity, in its steadfast celebration of things as they are. Presenting many of her lesser-known or previously unpublished photographs in the context of the iconic images reveals a subtle yet persistent view of the world.
The book reproduces two hundred full-page duotones of Diane Arbus photographs spanning her entire career, many of them never before seen. It also includes an essay, "The Question of Belief," by Sandra S. Phillips, senior curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and "In the Darkroom," a discussion of Arbus's printing techniques by Neil Selkirk, the only person authorized to print her photographs since her death. A 104-page Chronology by Elisabeth Sussman, guest curator of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art show, and Doon Arbus, the artist's eldest daughter, illustrated by more than three hundred additional images and composed mainly of previously unpublished excerpts from the artist's letters, notebooks, and other writings, amounts to a kind of autobiography. An Afterword by Doon Arbus precedesbiographical entries on the photographer's friends and colleagues by Jeff L. Rosenheim, associate curator of photographs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. These texts help illuminate the meaning of Diane Arbus's controversial and astonishing vision.

About the Author
I want to photograph the considerable ceremonies of our present because we tend while living here and now to perceive only what is random and barren and formless about it. While we regret that the present is not like the past and despair of its ever becoming the future, its innumerable inscrutable habits lie in wait for their meaning...These are our symptoms and our monuments. I want simply to save them, for what is ceremonious and curious and commonplace will be legendary.

Diane Arbus–born Diane Nemerov in New York City in 1923–first began taking pictures in the early 1940s following her marriage to Allan Arbus. She studied photography with Berenice Abbott, Alexey Brodovitch, and Lisette Model. Her first published photographs appeared in Esquire in 1960. Over the next ten years her work continued to appear in Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar, and other magazines.

In 1963 and 1966 she was awarded John Simon Guggenheim Fellowships. She was one of three photographers whose work was the focus of New Documents, a 1967 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art. In 1970 Arbus made a portfolio of prints entitled A box of ten photographs, which was to be the first of a series of similar limited editions of her work. She taught photography in the late sixties at Parsons School of Design, Rhode Island School of Design, and Cooper Union, and, in 1971, gave a private master class at the artists’ cooperative where she lived.

A year after her death in 1971, her work was selected for inclusion at the Venice Biennale–the first work of an American photographer to be so honored. The Museum of Modern Art hosted a major retrospective that traveled throughout the United States and Canada from 1972 to 1975. The three books of her work, Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph (1972), Diane Arbus: Magazine Work (1984), and Untitled: Diane Arbus (1995), were published posthumously and have remained continuously in print. Diane Arbus Revelations, in conjunction with the first major international retrospective of her work in thirty years, is the only comprehensive and intimate study of this singularly daring photographic artist.

Revealing, revelatory

I own two Arbus monographs and have lived with them for over 20 years. Many of those works are reproduced in this volume. There is a lot of talk about "the human condition" and I suppose all artists in one way or another wrestle with the notion. Arbus has always meant to me someone who seemed to reveal who we are beneath the fashion, the roles, the sex, the culture. I used one of her images as a means to illuminate a poster for a Sam Shepard play called Icarus' Mother - it was of a very young New York boy holding a toy hand grenade in a threatening way during play in Central Park - once seen never forgotten.
Nor will I forget her self portrait, naked pregnant, in this latest volume. So much. So much. This is the volume Arbus lovers have been waiting for. Printed in Germany, beautifully bound, positively packed with images, diary entries, extracts from letters, comment. A bargain.

Warning! For hard-core Arbus fans only

I enjoy Diane Arbus' photos, but this book is too much for me. Her photos are only a small part of the book -- the majority of the book is a catalogue of her life. The contact sheets are quite interesting, as they reveal a lot about how she approached a subject. The rest will likely appeal only to hardcore Arbus fans.

My granddaughter LOVES this book

I still have not figured out how to record my own voice and now it looks like the battery is wearing out. My granddaughter and I face time at least once a week and she always wants me to read this book to her. I will either have to figure out how to change the battery or buy another book just like this one because this is the book she always asks me to read. She will be 2 in December and we've been reading books for almost a year now.

The 3 rating is because I can't figure out how to record my own voice (my fault?) and now the battery seems to be wearing out.

About the Author
Maria Grazia Pernis has a Columbia Ph.D. in art history. She is the author of Le Platonism de Marsile Ficin et la Cour d'Urbin, and the co-author with Laurie Schneider Adams of Federico da Montefeltro and Sigismondo Malatesta: The Eagle and the Elephant (Peter Lang, 1996). She has published several articles, including "The Young Michelangelo and Lorenzo de' Medici's Circle," in Lorenzo de' Medici: New Perspectives (Peter Lang, 1993). Pernis has also lectured widely on the influence of humanism and Neoplatonic philosophy on Renaissance art. Laurie Schneider Adams is Professor Emerita of Art History at John Jay College and the Graduate Center, CUNY. She is the editor of Giotto in Perspective and the author of The Methodologies of Art, Italian Renaissance Art, Key Monuments of the Italian Renaissance, Key Monuments of the Baroque, Art and Psychoanalysis, Exploring Art, A History of Western Art, and Art Across Time.
