Light: A Radiant History from Creation to the Quantum Age, by Bruce Watson

Light begins at Stonehenge, where crowds cheer a solstice sunrise. After sampling myths explaining First Light, the story moves on to early philosophers' queries, then through the centuries, from Buddhist temples to Biblical scripture, when light was the soul of the divine.
Battling darkness and despair, Gothic architects crafted radiant cathedrals while Dante dreamed a "heaven of pure light." Later, following Leonardo's advice, Renaissance artists learned to capture light on canvas. During the Scientific Revolution, Galileo gathered light in his telescope, Descartes measured the rainbow, and Newton used prisms to solidify the science of optics. But even after Newton, light was an enigma. Particle or wave? Did it flow through an invisible "ether"? Through the age of Edison and into the age of lasers, Light reveals how light sparked new wonders--relativity, quantum electrodynamics, fiber optics, and more.

Although lasers now perform everyday miracles, light retains its eternal allure. "For the rest of my life," Einstein said, "I will reflect on what light is." Light explores and celebrates such curiosity.

Let there be Light in your library...
By Patricia Faris
Watson is an established historian with a keen attention to detail. I was introduced to him first through his book Bread and Roses, which, unexpectedly, Watson turned into a page-turner. From there I read his detailed, 'politically neutral' presentation of the controversial Sacco & Vanzetti Case. By then a committed fan of the author, I picked up Freedom Summer a few years back and have followed him ever since, as I learn so much from historical author's like Watson with well-established credentials. I have rarely read historical accounts that inspire me to read onward, well into the night. This man brings history to life.

Having just completed his latest book Light, I must say this is his finest and most ambitious work to date. It is a slower read than Watson's previous books, primarily due to the amount of detailed material provided within. It deviates from the books mentioned above only in scope, as it is a very vivid presentation of the history of an amorphous phenomena; one taken for granted by a species that depends upon it for their very lives. It is an excellent presentation of disciplines as disparate as science, aesthetics and mysticism. It provides what is oftentimes esoteric material in a format easily understood by the layman, with the author's skillful prose maintaining a compellingly cohesive thread throughout.

A truly encyclopedic exposition into a topic gleaned from not only the detailed research I have come to rely upon from Watson, much is offered firsthand as he recounts his travels around the globe to witness the various examples of how light has been observed, employed and used by humanity throughout the centuries. Whether discussing the use of light in paintings, architecture, religious scripture or pagan ritual, you feel transported to the location and at times are seemingly with Watson, from the ruins of the ancient Valle dei Templi in Sicily, seeing the constellation Orion as clearly as he, brought to our eyes from a distance light years away! He has developed a penchant for helping me feel what he is writing about, and that was never more in evidence in going through Light. Having no aversion to nor preference for any religion, ritual or myth, I discovered through this portion of the book the degree of reverence which man has held for light since time immemorial. I understand that reverence and now feel it myself.

If you have a penchant for history, are an academic aspirant, or you're simply an autodidact seeking to expand your understanding of our this Earth, Solar System, Galaxy and Universe(s) we are all a part of, I highly recommend taking the time to read this fantastically comprehensive treatise, one that brings the topic of light from the location it has been relegated to by modern man: the shadows.

By Amazon Reader
This beautifully written, entertaining and informative read on the human understanding of light is one of the best books I've purchased in the past few years. Through the lenses of history, culture and art, Watson uses the sciences of physics, optics, mathematics and more to explain how we arrived at our current knowledge of light, and our ability to harness it's power. Scientific explanations, and stories of the geniuses who discovered them, are equally balanced with tales of human curiosity, superstition, and often worship, centered on this most mysterious of natural phenomena. Watson shares in the awe and joy our understanding of light has brought to humankind. If that sound overwrought, read what Paris was like after dark, before the city was lit up at night, or how the great cathedrals of Europe were an attempt to capture light through the eyes of the Divine. I wish this book had been a college course when I was student. A highly recommended addition to anyone's library.

By liv pertzoff
My only claim to hanging out with geniuses was cataloguing the Sarton History of Science library at Harvard. Nothing except dust rubbed off on me, and certainly no curiosity about the composition of light. The sun comes up and makes things easier to see, right? Well! Watson's book is a glorious achievement. It reads like a thriller written by a poet who double majored in philosophy and physics and audited every anthropology course in the catalog. I was riveted. I read myself into terminal presbyopia. The book stretched my brain and imagination. I feel improved.

THE GENETIC GODS, by John C. Avise

They mastermind our lives, shaping our features, our health, and our behavior, even in the sacrosanct realms of love and sex, religion, aging, and death. Yet we are the ones who house, perpetuate, and give the promise of immortality to these biological agents, our genetic gods. The link between genes and gods is hardly arbitrary, as the distinguished evolutionary geneticist John Avise reveals in this compelling book. In clear, straightforward terms, Avise reviews recent discoveries in molecular biology, evolutionary genetics, and human genetic engineering, and discusses the relevance of these findings to issues of ultimate concern traditionally reserved for mythology, theology, and religious faith.

The book explains how the genetic gods figure in our development--not just our metabolism and physiology, but even our emotional disposition, personality, ethical leanings, and, indeed, religiosity. Yet genes are physical rather than metaphysical entities. Having arisen via an amoral evolutionary process--natural selection--genes have no consciousness, no sentient code of conduct, no reflective concern about the consequences of their actions. It is Avise's contention that current genetic knowledge can inform our attempts to answer typically religious questions--about origins, fate, and meaning. The Genetic Gods challenges us to make the necessary connection between what we know, what we believe, and what we embody.

Reviews of this book:
Our genes, [Avise] says, are responsible not only for how we got here and exist day to day, but also for the core of our being--our personalities and morals. It is our genetic make-up that allows for and formulates our religious belief systems, he argues. Avise does not eschew spirituality but seeks a more informed, less confrontational approach between science and the pulpit.

Reviews of this book:
For the general scientific reader, the book is an excellent distillation of a broad and increasingly important field, a course of causation that cannot be ignored. From advising expectant parents to getting innocent people off death row, genetics increasingly dominates our lives. The sections on genetics are expertly written, particularly for those readers without in-depth knowledge. The author explains slowly and carefully just how genetics operates, using multiple metaphors. His genetic discourse proceeds in a neighborly fashion, as one might tell stories while sitting in a rocking chair at a country store. He seems to be invigorated by genes and just can't wait to tell about them.

Reviews of this book:
As a whole, this book is quite informative and stimulating, and sections of it are beautifully written. Indeed, Professor Avise has a real gift for prose and scientific expositions, and I would suspect that he must be a formidable lecturer...At its core, [The Genetic Gods] is a survey, and a very nice one at that, of evolutionary genetics, the field of the author's major research interests. There is a strong sociobiological cast to the arguments, and the work and ideas of E. O. Wilson figure prominently. The presentation of evolutionary genetics is imbedded in a more general discussion of modern human and molecular genetics...However, this book is, most of all, a philosophical treatise that attempts, admittedly with the bias of a biologist, to examine the intersection of the fundamental premises of evolution and religion. Professor Avise has given us plenty to think about in this book [and]...it was a real pleasure to wrestle...

From Publishers Weekly
Addressing himself to the "open-minded reader who would appreciate a simplified discussion of recent evolutionary-genetic findings," Avise, professor of biology at the University of Georgia, states that genes control so much of our behavior, health and thoughts that they can be considered "gods," with more say in our everyday lives than those of the world's major religions. "Genes are tangible entities, with profound influences on humanity. Indeed, over the last century, the genetic gods would seem to have wrestled from the supernatural gods considerable authority over human affairs. Does any room remain for a metaphysical god?" Although Avise takes this metaphor too far, his account of the role genes play in shaping the human condition is wholly involving, paying particular attention to issues of reproduction, aging and death. In addition to presenting ample biological information in a form accessible to the nonspecialist, Avise does a superb job of discussing many of the ethical implications that have arisen from our growing knowledge of human genetics. Just a few of the topics covered are genetic engineering, the patenting of life, genetic screening, abortion, human cloning, gene therapy and insurance-related controversies. 21 line illustrations.

From Library Journal
Avise (genetics, Univ. of Georgia) explains thoroughly how evolution operates on a genetic level. His goal is to show that humans can look to this information as a way to answer fundamental questions of life instead of looking to traditional religious beliefs. Unfortunately, what could have been a fascinating and provocative book for informed lay readers turns out to be a rather average academic tome, written in a dense, scholarly style that is sometimes hard to get through. Although Avise includes some very interesting discussions of ethical concerns related to genetic issues, his book is recommended only for academic collections and some larger public libraries.?Eric D. Knowledge of the human genome enables us to inquire: To what extent do genes and environmental interactions shape us in terms of our emotions, personalities, behaviors, moral values, and religiosity? How did these genes and their relationships to external factors come to occur? In The Genetic Gods Dr. John C. Avise provides a most intriguing and thought-provoking address of these questions…a good read for persons interested in understanding some of the possible far-reaching consequences of the human genome project in the context of an evolutionary world-view and some of its possible implications for science, religion, and human affairs. Engaging exploration of genetics and attendant ethical issue
By Dennis Littrell
John Avise's engaging book is both an overview and an introduction to recent genetic research as well as an assessment of the social, ethical and religious ramifications stemming from our manipulation of the genetic code. The terminology is a little formidable in spots, and there is perhaps more genetics being explained here than most general readers would want, but these are minor obstacles when one considers the reward: listening to an expert talk about what's happening in genetics today while considering the implications. I was very impressed with Avise's level-headed and balanced assessment of the controversies. This is a sophisticated book, deeply considered and carefully expressed.
The author is the distinguished Professor of Genetics at the University of Georgia and an evolutionary biologist who really knows his stuff. "The genetic gods" in the title is a metaphor of course--he even refers jokingly to "protein angels" on page 208--his point being that we are to some very real extent at the whims of our genes, just as the Greeks once thought they were at the whims of the gods on Mount Olympus. However don't imagine that Avise is presenting a genetic-centered reductionist approach in this book. He wants to emphasize that the genes are subtly, and sometimes not so subtly, influencing our lives, but that is far from the whole story. Avise suggests that the proper way to look at the culture verses genes debate is to think of culture as an "epigenetic phenomenon...itself a product of biological evolution," and that "genes and culture coevolve" (pp. 158-159). The environment shapes us, but we in turn condition the environment. As Avise expresses it, "the individual's mind to a considerable extent creates itself through the environments it conditions" (p. 159). In our attempt to understand how the mind works and to account for human behavior, Avise's states that a "myopically reductionist approach that neglects multiple levels of biological, personal, and social causation" is inadequate, as are "uncritical holistic approaches alone" (p. 165).
This just makes sense and it also makes moot the sometimes heated "culture verses genetics" debate, which is similar to the old "nature verses nurture" false dichotomy. Quite simply, how can we separate the effects and influence of the environment and culture from that of the genes, and vice versa?
Professor Avise does not shy away from a position on whether we should intervene genetically when something is amiss. While some people believe that "developing embryos are governed by intelligent and caring supernatural forces," Avise insists that "they are governed by natural gene-environment interactions that unfortunately can" go horribly awry as in the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome or in Down's syndrome (p. 199). In such cases, he asks, "Should we then take the reins?" His careful answer on the next page is yes, but with the understanding that "the interests of the individuals most closely involved...should take legal precedence over those of more distant parties."
Avise believes that ethical questions about genetic engineering should be considered by all members of society, not just scientists or theologians or lawyers (p. 202). He believes in a case-by-case appraisal (p. 201). "The only approach," he avers, "is that in which the moral authority of a god is asserted." He wryly observes, that since there is such a diversity of opinion, "any supernatural deity either has been strangely silent on such issues or else has conveyed vastly different messages to different listeners."
This book requires an effort on the part of the reader, there is no doubt about that. This is no breezy Time Magazine treatment. But I think what we can learn from Professor Avise on a topic of such overriding human interest is well worth the effort.

Musings on Selfish Genes
By Roshan Kamath
John Avise presents a review of contemporary molecular biology which is quite accessible to the 'lay' reader with some prior exposure to the general area of evolutionary-genetics. The discussions are somewhat philosophically charged (i.e. they do not remain necessarily technical) and touch upon social, emotional, and theological issues too. However, there is no attempt at actively engaging the theistic implications of modern genetics; the book remains focussed on the biological & behavioural aspects.

Avise basically elaborates on notion of the "Selfish Gene" which seeks to 'immortalize' itself by using individuals as 'ephemeral' vehicles for perpetuation. Using this point of view, the book reviews the basic doctrines of genetics & evolution, the genesis & replication of life/genes, genetic disorders & benefits, gene replication strategies (including sexual reproduction & death), nature vs. nurture issues, and gene-therapy.

Avise's style is engaging, clear, & succint - and never pedantic. The accompanying glossary is very useful for non-biologists to fallback onto when reading the more technical sections. I only wish that the notes for each chapter had been foot-notes rather than being located to the end of the book (but this is a purely personal preference).

Overall I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in acquainting herself with recent advances in molecular biology, evolutionary genetics, and genetic engineering - and its implication to modern human thought, philosophy, and civilization.

An essential read for everyone with concerns about humanity and biodiversity.
By harry becker
The kind of book that everyone should read. Essential ingredient of humanity's continuing enlightenment. Produced by someone with deep insight into the enormous scope of evolution and genetics. In the same category I would mention - amongst many others - the authors Richard Dawkins, Steve Jones, Jerry Coyne, Nick Lane, Nessa Carey and Lewis Wolpert.

Anyone can find a partner, but very few find their ideal partner. Choosing the wrong partner not only has a direct impact on how one succeeds in life, but it can also hinder productivity because so much energy is spent on fixing the relationship instead of the relationship being complementary to one’s success. A successful relationship is something one can attract by the person they consciously become. Additionally, having such success can be taught. About the Author
Trevor Scott is no stranger to helping others. As an influential dating and relationship coach, he has an unrivaled ability to connect with a diverse scope of individuals. Before helping others find their ideal partner, he began his career as an insurance broker. Throughout his tenure, he led hundreds of personal development trainings and empowered over 10,000 individuals to achieve more by becoming more. While building his brand in the insurance industry, Trevor experienced a devastating setback when a 5 year relationship came to a disastrous halt 2 months prior to his wedding day. Following the relationship’s arduous demise, he was determined to show himself and others the difference between knowing a path and actually walking a path to living an exceptional life. Sharing his experiences with others became his ultimate purpose. His mission was to help others find the right partner so they can build a solid foundation for a lasting relationship. Trevor realized that choosing the wrong spouse has a direct impact on how one succeeds in life. Choosing incorrectly hinders productivity because so much energy is spent on fixing the relationship instead of the relationship being complementary to one’s success. A successful relationship is something people can attract by the person they consciously become. Additionally, having such success can be taught. As he began to document his realizations, he deepened his scholastic research interning with an accredited marriage counselor and subsequently obtained a coaching certification. Through his 60/40 principle of logic versus emotion, he lays out the blueprint on how to attract, identify and keep ones ideal partner. As shared in his book, Never Settle, “Anyone can find a spouse, but very few find their ideal mate. Finding is reserved for the searcher. However, the search is only successful if you know how to look.” Never Settle shows you how to look. Known as the “Dating Designer” Trevor’s goal is to help you design your personal plan to find and keep “Mr. or Mrs.” Right. By living the phrase “actions speak louder than words,” his skills, research and life experiences were utilized when choosing his life partner. As he has done with countless others, Trevor shares in his book how he used the same skills to navigate the complex dating scene to finding a valuable partner; which ultimately led him to marrying his amazing wife!

Refreshing candid!
By Annette Dunlap
Every now and then, you have to take a break from Facebook, and read a real book. I loved the book! It's a great read. Trevor Scott wrote from a platform of self-reflection and personal development. I can really respect that.

I see so many single, never been married people scared to death. Its not the commitment but the fear of making a mistake when choosing a mate. There are so many charlatans and "ho whisperers" (yeah, I said it) pretending to be life coaches and relationship experts who are making money off people's insecurities. Folks are jumping through circus hoops and blaming the other gender. The fakers don't even walk their own talk. It's disgusting!

In Never Settle, Trevor TREO Scott's approach to finding the right mate was practical. He really took an honest assessment of himself as a man instead defining himself by his assets and accomplishments. He took learned behavior, emotions, and goals and put them in a nice logical manner. The "Stop Making Up S**t Controlling Your Emotions" with the five steps was awesome. It reminded me of a V-8 vegetable juice commercial.

The best part of it all is that he succeeded in finding his mate and getting married.

Never Settle had me talking out loud like I was in church. Preach! I even highlighted and folded different pages. Excellent work!

Gr 5-8-Since he was a young colt, Joey has been loved and cared for by Alber, a young English farm boy. At the beginning of Wold War I, Albert's father sells Joey to a captain in the cavalry. The boy is devastated and promises Joey that someday he will find him. Joey experiences army life and the disastrous consequences of a cavalry charge into machine guns. He is captured as a prisoner of war and becomes a hospital cart transport horse for the German army. The he's used by the German soldiers to pull gun carts through the muddy trenches. Joey bolts after his friend Topthorn dies. He ends up in no-man's land between the trenches. By a coin toss, he becomes again the property of the English. Joey is taken to a veterinary hospital where he is reunited with Albert. As the soldiers from both sides of the conflict share their thoughts and feelings with Joey, listeners get unique and perceptive views of World War I. John Keating's' different accents are pitch perfect as he draws listeners into the story (Scholastic, 1982) by Michael Morpurgo. An excellent choice for fans of historical fiction.-Samantha Larsen Hastings, Riverton Library, UT (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. From Booklist
Like Morpurgo's Private Peaceful (2004), this searing World War I novel reveals the unspeakable slaughter of soldiers on all sides fighting against people who are just like them. The story is told by an English farm horse, Joey, and, as in Cynthia Kadahota's Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam (2007), the first-person narrative blends the animal's physical experience with what men say. On the farm, Joey has close ties to Albert, who is too young to join up when his dad first sells Joey to the army. Charging into battle under machine-gun fire, Joey is captured by the Germans, who train him to haul ambulances and guns. His reunion with Albert in battle is sentimental and contrived, but the viewpoint brings close the fury of the thundering guns, the confusion, and the kindness of enemies who come together in No Man's Land to save the wounded horse. Joey's ability to understand the language wherever he is--England, France, Germany--reinforces the novel's antiwar message, and the terse details speak eloquently about peace. Hazel Rochman

Powerful Beyond Words
By Sam Foster
This has been an interesting day in that I saw the preview for the film, 'War Horse', and being so moved by that, I had to read the book. I downloaded it to my iPad and proceeded to read it in one sitting, taking time out only to eat dinner. I will not go into a lengthy review, as there are plenty of good reviews of that type already available. I will say that this book has moved me in ways that quite possibly no other book has managed previously. 'War Horse' achieves four things for me, and achieves them in a most brilliant fashion: 1) It is extremely well-written (there is something about the style that reminds me of my favourite author, Hermann Hesse), contains outstanding character development, and seamlessly incorporates the other three achievements to which I refer; 2) It speaks of the futility and madness of war, several times bringing to mind scenes from 'All Quiet on the Western Front' (1930); 3) It deals with horses, and while containing some elements that were difficult to read due to my all too visual mind, it is realistic yet hopeful and inspiring; 4) It is set during an historical event and is believable in its settings. I experienced every emotion while reading this, and became attached to its characters, as though they were old friends. There's not much more you can ask for from a book than that. I have a distinct feeling that this was only the first time I will have read 'War Horse', as I suspect I will revisit Joey, Albert, Topthorn and the others many more times.

Horsepower
By Miz Ellen
In the tradition begun by Black Beauty, the hero and narrator of this story is a horse. He cares about horse things: water, grass, doing his work well, and a kind master to work for.

He does not know what the different colored uniforms mean; he does not care if the person he is working for speaks English, French or German. He does not understand the forces in the human world that compel men to fight and kill one another.

This is the story of Joey, a Thoroughbred/draft horse cross who began life working for the son of a British farmer. Young Albert copes with his difficult and drunken father by training the young horse that his father bought at auction to spite a neighbor. Under Albert's loving tutelage, Joey learns to carry a rider and pull a plow.

But when war comes, Albert's father needs the money so Joey is sold to the army. And so begins the adventure of a lifetime for Joey. That first separation from Albert is the harbinger of many partings: the fortunes and misfortunes of war sweep Joey helplessly along. He's a horse caught in a world where machines are replacing horses and bringing new horrors and perils into the world. But while cavalry charges become discredited, horses are still needed to pull the big guns, the supply wagons and the ambulances. Machines can't cope with the mud and primitive roads of the era. Horses are also still needed by farmers.

Joey's story brings to life the hardship and suffering of the estimated six million horses that were pressed into service during World War I. It's a powerful, gut wrenching story because most of those horses never made it back to their original homes.

Some people would consider WAR HORSE by Michael Morpurgo to be an anti-war story. However, I found this story to be uplifting--Joey, despite all he suffers, retains his trust and love for human beings. He doesn't understand the war or any of the causes of his suffering, but he responds to the people who treat him kindly with love and loyalty. And he meets with many people who do their best to ease his suffering and to take care of him. In humanity and horsemanship, the world is redeemed. This is a wonderful story. Highly recommended. Soon to be a motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg.

By Angela V
War Horse is about a horse named Joey that gets sold to the army. Joey goes into war. He meets another horse, Topthorne, that becomes Joey’s really good friend. It is about Joey dealing with different soldiers in the war and losing friends. Joey finds his owner and the war ends.

My favorite character was Topthorn because he cares about Joey and was friendly. My second favorite character was Emily because she seems like a caring person. She also seems like she’s my age and is a tough girl. My favorite part of the book is when Joey meets Albert. That was my favorite part because it was a happy time for Joey and Albert. They really loved each other.

A sad scene in the book was when Topthorn dies, and Joey is really sad. The scene was written very well because it made the reader very sad.

One thing I didn’t like about this book was there wasn’t enough action. The book was a little slow and sad. I didn’t find the ending frustrating. I liked the end as a cliffhanger because I liked not knowing if Joey would get back with his owner, Albert. I did find it difficult to care about Joey. I couldn’t work it out because he was always saying his legs hurt, and it was annoying.

The story wasn’t scary to me. I did find the book focused on a theme that was a little interesting. It was about a horse that was tough and courageous; he made friends and lost friends. The horse met mean people and nice people.

I would recommend this book to younger and older readers that like stories about war. I also think this is a book that owners of animals and people that like animals would like.

I thought the book was a little less than average. I don’t think the book had enough action and it wasn’t exciting. The part of War Horse that I liked was the friendship of Albert and Joey. The book wasn’t interesting. It never made me surprised. I gave this book a 2 out of 5.

From Publishers Weekly
True pornography began in the mid-1700s with Samuel Richardson's voyeuristic novels Pamela and Clarissa , in Wilson's odd estimate. The author of The Outsider , etc., further maintains that sexual perversionssuch as those catalogued by Richard von Krafft-Ebingscarcely existed before 1740; only after Romanticism unleashed modern imaginations did sexual deviance flourish, he asserts. The "sexual outsiders" whose deliciously naughty doings are chronicled in this thought-provoking, entertaining mishmash are men who used libido as rocket fuel to escape the body's confines and soar toward higher consciousness. They include Swinburne and T. E. Lawrence, both of whom liked to be flogged; Yukio Mishima, trapped inside his womb-like subjective world; Byron, titillated by an incestuous affair with his half-sister; egoist Henry Miller; and guilt-ridden, promiscuous homosexual Ludwig Wittgenstein. Wilson's starting-point is Charlotte Bach (born Carl Hajdu), a Hungarian male transvestite of whose farfetched theory of eros and evolution the author makes too much as he hammers home his thesis that sex resides as much in the heart and the imagination as in the loins.

IMAGINATION AND HUMAN EVOLUTION
By Peter Payne
The literary reviews of THE MISFITS mostly emphasize that Wilson's book is worth reading because it is about sex, and specifically about the sexual deviations of many famous people, including Paul Tillich, Havelock Ellis, and Carl Jung. This does indeed make the book fascinating. In fact, the book could well be entitled "A History of Pornography," or more generally, "A History of Sex in Western Literature." But this is NOT what the book is really about.

The basic thesis of THE MISFITS is that man is capable of being in control of his own evolution through the power of his imagination. The primary problem is that our imagination is too often embroiled in -- and hence stunted by -- indulgence in sex. People cultivate the indulgent child within themselves because it gives them so much pleasure; but such cultivation of sexual deviation leads to self ignorance and lack of self control. Most people probably know the joke that the brand name Adidas stands for, "All day I dream about sex." Unfortunately, this is really an accurate description. So if one did not waste so much mental energy obsessed with sexual and romantic daydreams, what would occupy one's mind instead? This is the important question Colin Wilson addresses. The human mind most often functions like a robot - like Susan Blackmore's "meme machine" - so we spend most of our time in dreary triviality and repetition, with a worm's eye view of the world. Colin Wilson presents the optimistic premise that we can develop the imagination to give us a bird's eye view of the world, and hence give life meaning. This makes him one of the most important writers of our time.

Wilson is often criticized for being gullible and superstitious. He speaks of developing "hidden powers," the most important of which is "Faculty X: the ability to suddenly grasp the reality of other times and places," all of which smacks of the occult (and in fact, on of Wilson's most interesting books is THE OCCULT). In THE MISFITS, Wilson employs Rupert Sheldrake's theory of "morphic resonance," which includes the notion that when something has once been learned by some people, other people can learn it more readily. Sheldrake is generally considered a crackpot by the mainstream scientific community, and it has even been suggested that his books should be burned. This assessment is supposed to be based on Sheldrake's flawed scientific procedure. This might be so, though I have only heard his ideas denigrated, and have yet to hear specific reasons why his observations are untrustworthy. If consciousness is an intrinsic property of the universe, and there is no reason why this assumption is less reasonable than the assumption that it is an unintended consequence of blind physical processes, then such phenomena as synchronicity and morphic resonance are not inherently absurd.

(Peter Payne, author of CAPTAIN CALIFORNIA: A YOUNG MAN'S ENCOUNTER WITH THE EVIL WITHIN HIMSELF).

Flawed but interesting.
By Luc REYNAERT
This book is fundamentally flawed. It accepts, Lamarckism (the inheritance of acquired characteristics), still more ridiculously that 'advances in the level of human consciousness can be passed on by a kind of magnetic induction', and ultimately that 'life is fundamentally good'.
So, for Wilson there is no struggle for life and survival of the fittest.
The basic thesis of this book is also a non event: the author refutes the theory that sexual deviation stays on a higher step on the evolution ladder than normal sexual behaviour.
But for those who didn't read the biographies of Byron, de Sade, D.H. Lawrence, Wittgenstein, Swinburne, Joyce, Mishima, H. Miller, P. Tillich, A. Koestler, P. Grainger and others, they will find good analyses of their attitude to life (and sex).
This book also contains good comments on some basic ideas about sex (physical and psychological) and on the importance of imagination.
I confess that I had to consult more than once a solid English dictionary in order to understand the laundry list of sexual deviations.
All in all, a very mixed bag.

UNUSUAL FORMS OF SEXUAL BEHAVIOR
By James L. Park
Colin Wilson
The Misfits: A Study of Sexual Outsiders

(New York: Carroll & Graf Publishers, Inc., 1988) 272 pages

This popular writer pulls together what he has learned
about unusual forms of sex from his reading.
It is a good source of raw material for a new theory of sex,
but Wilson attempts no such synthesis.
