About the Author
Rob Toulson is Professor of Creative Industries at the University of Westminster. He holds a PhD in the field of digital signal processing (awarded by Anglia Ruskin University in 2004) and a first degree in Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University (1999). Rob has a number of year’s industrial experience in digital signal analysis, control systems design, rapid prototyping, and model based design, as well as commercial experience in sound engineering and music production. His main focus is now in developing collaborative research between the technical and creative industries.

Tim Wilmshurst is the author of Designing Embedded Systems with PIC Microcontrollers. He has been designing embedded systems since the early days of microcontrollers. For many years this was for Cambridge University, where he led a development team building original systems for research applications - for example in measurement of bullet speed, wind tunnel control, simulated earthquakes, or seeking a cure to snoring. Now he is Head of Electronic Systems at the University of Derby, where he aims to share his love of engineering design with his students.

Light and easy reading for a professional software developer of 30+ years. I'd highly recommend getting the NXP LPC1768 and the associated mbed application board to follow along with the content. Pick up some SG90 micro-servos and some 28BYJ-48 steppers while you're at it - they're cheap and help make your experiments come alive.

Excellent book on getting started with the mbed

Excellent book on getting started with the mbed. Lots of great examples along with the code to run it. I do have a lot of experience with programming and embedded systems. While the book does try to make learning about embedded systems easy, having some knowledge of programming and digital systems is helpful.

This book contains valuable information about energy healing, specifically the modality of Reiki. Angie Webster begins the book with sharing her own amazing, healing story through the use of Reiki. She continues by giving clear explanations of the what’s, where’s and how’s of energy. Although we experience energy in every moment of our lives, we are often unaware of its existence. Her comprehensive teaching includes practical exercises that are easy to learn, and use.

Angie reminds us that the more we learn about energy, the more we realize our own power to create lives of health, happiness and peace. We learn everything is connected, through the power of energy. Whether you are new to the subject of energy healing, or already have some knowledge and experience in this modality, you will learn much more! I highly recommend this inspirational, and informative, book.

This is one of the best books I have read on this subject. Angie has a solid knowledge of Reiki, & Energy Healing in general. Her writing style is fun & easy to read, and anyone interested in this, whether just curious or a practitioner of many years, will certainly benefit from her knowledge. Wonderful book!

Prepare to be surprised, amazed, and alarmed by the people who created and shaped this comic icon.

Here is the internal dialog I had going at one point while reading this book.

Me: "So the inventor of Wonder Woman was a psychology PhD who also invented the first lie detector."

Also me: "Neat."

Me: "Get this, he was also a pretty hardcore first-wave feminist and based a lot of Wonder Woman's stories and characteristics on Margaret Sanger, the birth-control pioneer."

Also me: "That's pretty cool."

Me: "He also lived with three women, had children with two of them, and balanced this unusual lifestyle fairly gracefully in way that his wife, Halloway, could fulfill her ambition to maintain a full-time job, while his mistress, Olive Bynre, could do what she wanted and raise the kids, while the third woman, Hurston, could come and go as she pleased. I should mention that Byrne wore thick silver bracelets, while Hurston and he were really into bondage."

Also me: "That's pretty crazy, I mean especially for the early twentieth century..."

Me: "You're still not getting it: kick-ass first-wave feminist sensibilities, thick silver bracelets, bondage, and making people tell the truth."

Also me: "Oh God, that's Wonder Woman's whole gig, truth-telling lasso and all. Wow."

So if after that little exchange you find yourself intrigued instead of bored, check this book out. It really is more of a biography of William Moulton Marston (WW's creator) than of the character, but it really is pretty interesting and naturally puts Wonder Woman's development into a more complete context. And the detailed research that went into digging this story out of DECADES of deliberate obfuscation is simply amazing. The author, Jill Lepore, deserves a round of applause for finding this amazing story and bringing it to the public in such an engaging way. This book integrates the history of feminism, comic books, psychology, social shifts in both sexuality and gender, and in the process gives us a nuanced look at some truly interesting people.

Martson was a competent but spotlight-loving academic who couldn't resist sabotaging his own successes (in that way he is similar to his predecessor, The wizard from Vienna: Franz Anton Mesmer). Halloway, the wife and rock of the relationship(s) who wanted to give life her best as a working woman but still be able to raise a family. Byrne, the (seduced) graduate student who worked on much of WMM's projects anonymously and raised the Marston family to compensate for her own lonely childhood. And there are many others.

Suffice to say - this is an engaging read for anyone interested in the history of feminism, comics, and (naturally) Wonder Woman herself.

FUN AND FANTASTIC WAY TO LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE WOMEN'S LIBERATION MOVEMENT

wonderful book. I had NO idea it would have so much good history in it.....I have purchased several more copies to give to friends and relatives (INCLUDING MEN!) as presents. You should promote it as an enjoyable, fun way to learn about the history of women's liberation.
I am one of the founders and current board member of The Action Committee for Women in Prison.....and am passing the word on to everyone I can think of.

Wonder Woman, Suffrage and the Family Behind the Comic.

Aside from learning about the complex origins of Wonder Woman, I learned a lot more about the history of woman's suffrage and I have even a deeper admiration for Margaret Sanger who was the inspiration for Wonder Woman. The mini bio on Sanger was quite impressive and after learning of the amazing number of births that her mother had that possible contributed to her early death, you can understand her motivation to free women from a life of continuous child birth and to have rights within their marriage and as an independent individual with options for career. The creator of Wonder Woman, William Marston, was a story in his self between inventing the lie detector test and an inability to maintain sustained employment in spite of many excellent academic assignments. In addition, his unique ability to embrace the woman's suffrage movement while living with two women, his wife Elizabeth and Olive Byrne, and raising 4 children with both is quite fascinating. Both women were able to sustain careers, particularly after Olive was able to ease up on her primary child rearing. The progression of the comic is frustrating as Lepore explains the challenges of censors, vindictive psychiatrists and after Marston's early death, the assignment of a writer who has virtual no admiration for the original persona of Wonder Woman. Lepore provides so much about the unusual lives of the Marston family, advanced in some ways, two women involved with child rearing allowing one to have a career while explaining the motivations and symbolism of the comic. A book that was both fascinating and educating on the woman's movement complete with an update on Wonder Woman's place in the feminist movement of the 60s and 70s.

GR: One thing that really sets your book apart from other similar books is its specificity. You really drill down on how people have actually built these businesses. Why did you take this approach?
CB: Because most books about business are too generic. They are filled with platitudes instead of data and real instructions. There's nothing wrong with saying “Go for it!”—but the purpose of this book is to say, “OK, you're ready to go for it? Great. Here's how you actually do it.”

This isn't a book about business, at least not as most people think about it. Instead, it's a book about freedom. It's for those who want to escape from corporate life, build something of their own to support their families, or just find a way to make more money.

GR: Is it really possible to make a good business out of your passion?
CB: Yes, but the key is to combine your passion with something that is useful to the world. I used to be very passionate about eating pizza and playing video games, but no one wanted to pay me to do it.

That's why we have to go further, until we find the convergence point between what we're excited about and what other people value. For example, I met a guy who was a snowboarding instructor in Canada. He created a DVD set of instructional videos. He followed his passion, he found a way to make it useful, and it's now a $300,000 a year business.

GR: Many books about startups focus on technology companies; by contrast, you focus on small businesses started by people creating companies around something they love to do. Often, they don’t look like typical “entrepreneurs,” don’t come from traditional business backgrounds, and don’t have special skills. Why did you take this approach?
CB: I think there's a real misconception about entrepreneurship. As you noted, some people hear the word startup and imagine things like venture capital, funding rounds, and eventually cashing out if possible. It's not that different from the conception of traditional business—wearing a suit, sitting behind a desk, playing golf after lunch.

But there's also an entirely different way of creating freedom, and it's just now starting to get the attention it deserves. This alternate perspective is about starting on your own, with limited money and no special training. You don't need outside investment (of any kind), an MBA, or a 65-page business plan that no one will ever read. You just need a product or service, a group of people willing to buy it, and a means of getting paid.

GR: The economy has a lot of people feeling anxious about their financial situations. Do you think this is a bad time to take a risk like a startup?
CB: When the economy causes us to feel anxious, it's also a good time to reassess the whole concept of risk. For many people, it may be much riskier to cast your lot in the traditional job market. But what if you didn't have to compete in a crowded marketplace—what if you could essentially create your own job? The beautiful thing about starting small means that you're not necessarily competing with anyone, and your financial risk is low.

In the long run, risk is related to security. Many of the people in this book were successful in creating their own security instead of entrusting it to someone else.

GR: You did a crazy amount of research for The $100 Startup. What surprised you the most?
CB: The first thing that surprised me was how willing most respondents were to talk about the inner workings of their business, especially the financial details. The common attitude was: if this helps other people in their work, I want to share it.

Digging deeper, I was surprised by some of the interesting businesses people had started. There is a guy who earns more than $100,000 a year helping people use their Frequent Flyer miles. There is another guy in Croatia known as “Mr. Spreadsheet,” who has also crafted a six-figure business helping corporate employees manage data better. There were also plenty of interesting businesses that were more traditional, like a retail yarn shop in Portland and an Israeli-American designer who created a business selling hand-made wedding contracts.

GR: You give some controversial advice: you don’t need a business plan, you don’t need to spend too much time planning, you don’t need a large amount of money to launch, and you don’t need special skills or expertise. What do you say to people who disagree?
CB: I'd say the proof is found in everyone who has made it happen. My hope is that this book will serve as a blueprint for many more success stories, just like the unconventional and unexpected entrepreneurs I talked to from all over the world.

Less Examples, More Detail

This is an inspiring book. At least a couple times while reading it I took a pen to jot down some ideas.

My problem with the book is that there are too many success stories but no real detail on the struggle for that success. I think this book would have been more successful if the author had chosen one or two examples per chapter to really dig into. I agree with one reviewer who said that most of the examples are in the form "got an idea, started a website, made money". How did they do it all? That what I like to know. It's great to know that people have started businesses with so little capital but I want to know the struggles, the low points and how they persevered.

Toward the end of the book I just skimmed. I wanted someone to cheer for and I didn't find that in 1/2 page examples.

Top selling book on entrepreneurship?

Well I am disappointed in this book. As a top selling book, I was expecting perhaps too much.

First I would say the target audience of this book are probably those people who never ever read any other book on business, or never even thought about starting a business. Almost every advice is very basic.

When I read author had interviewed so many businesses, I was hoping he would have included more "technical" details about them. For example, the photographer in Spain, how she was advertised, how much she invested in her gear, did she take any classes, how she hires assistants, if any etc. Or coffee shop guy, how did he get money for coffee shop, how many hours he works at coffee shop, how did he gain experience for running it etc (I am pretty sure starting a coffee shop is not exactly $100 startup).

Or that single mom who became marketing consultant, exactly how did she land her first client? How did she dress, and gained their respect? How did she learn about marketing? How did she convince companies that she was a real deal not a joke? (At our company, we had experiences with so-called Social Media Marketing experts. It seems most of them just know how to update their Facebook statuses or send a twitter update.)

For good parts, the book is easy to read. It will inspire many people to do what they enjoy. It does provide a starting point. It repeats general knowledge but it is good to have all that knowledge in one place.

In the end, don't expect anything revolutionary from this book. In my opinion, if you are already inspired to do your own thing then try to find a book on that thing. If you want to start a photography business then you might be better served by a book on starting photography business than this book.

90% General Principles from Chris, 10% Vague Details of Each Business

Very disappointed, hated the read. The book's own description is that it chooses "to focus on the 50 most intriguing case studies" and that the author is "not content to speak in generalities." However, I found both of these facts to be very misguided.

Because the book was sourced from hundreds of interviews and described itself as focusing on the case studies of these businesses, I expected a very detailed analysis of the 50 businesses Chris chose. After all, a case study is defined as a detailed breakdown of a particular matter over time. Since many reviewers stated that they found the book to be very detailed, I was shocked to find that the 50 businesses were described in very cursory detail without an analysis of each individual strategy used to develop the product/service, market it, and monetize it. Rather than 90% of the book being detailed analysis of each business and 10% the principles that Chris takes away, the book was 90% Chris's principles and 10% vague details of each business.

Instead of wasting your money, you can get the same level of detail by reading the post Chris wrote for Tim Ferriss's 4-Hour Workweek blog. If you feel obligated to get a book, buy 4-Hour Workweek instead. Many of the concepts from this book rip off what was already said in Tim's book anyways.

My niece love this book and it was really cheap so I'm more then happy with it. It was used but n really nice shape, not damage whatsoever so I'll be more then happy to buy another book from this seller :-)

Aside from the great pictures of Eminem, the actual book was a long shot from what I had hoped and expected to get. Would recommend it for the pictures, but nothing else.

About the Author
Rainy Hutchinson is an acupuncturist, who runs her own clinic in Sheffield. She trained first in Fine Art Sculpture and worked for ten years as a teacher of Art & Design before retraining as an acupuncturist. While studying, she used drawings to visually represent her notes, and she was soon approached by fellow students, and those from other colleges who wanted to use her drawings as a learning aid. She has since completed further training in paediatric acupuncture, and she now treats both adults and children in her clinic.

Amazing for acupuncture students!

I rarely post reviews but was extremely excited to receive this coloring book. Memorizing from Deadman's or CAM can be exhausting for any grad student attending a Traditional Chinese Medicine school. This book helps me take mental breaks and lock in the more commonly used points. I brought it to school with me and tons of classmates wanted the book, it's important to support the author and buy this book instead of making photo copies for friends. I tend to use Japanese fine tip pens to color in like juicy or maica but I assume one could use any of the pens folks use for adult coloring books.

Great book this helps me cement in the things I have learned in Deadman. I love to color and recite what the point does. I recommend this book to all acupuncture students that don't learn from memory alone. Pictures help get this in the brain.

Not really much to color.

I bought it thinking it would be a nice way to review point functions but their functions are kind of nonstandard. There is not really much to color in this "coloring book" because there isn't much space between the lines. It's kind of convoluted in it's approach.
