Taking the Plunge

A year after my Google discovery, in 2002, I was feeling philosophical. Like so many people, I was struck by the paradox that the human struggle for advancement was killing the planet that sustains us. The scientific community agreed that global temperatures were rising as a direct result of human intervention. If this pattern continued, within decades climatic conditions on our planet would change at an unprecedented rate. Coastal cities would flood from the rising oceans, lush agricultural land would turn into desert, and storms would increase in both strength and number. Millions would die from displacement and starvation.

Despite this apocalyptic forecast, the solution remains simple. Humans need to reduce their emissions of �so-�called greenhouse gases. The one hitch: such conservation may result in a �short-�term dip in the global economy. Quality of life–as defined by economists–might decline, especially for those who prefer driving their SUV to fetch a carton of milk rather than walk or ride a bicycle. The immediate benefits, however, would be less air pollution, a healthier population and a rise in innovative technologies and industries that cater to a less destructive society. Most important, a reduction of emissions would ensure atmospheric equilibrium and ultimately benefit all of our children, and their children, and their children’s children.

These are the facts.

Although the appropriate course of action is clear, our society has chosen a different route. Total �greenhouse-�gas emissions increased by 50 per cent between 1970 and 2000. This trend is not changing.

Like many socially conscious citizens, I did what I could. I used my bicycle or public transit for almost all my transportation needs. I kept the heat low in my home. I tried to minimize my reliance on the power grid. It was frustrating, however, that despite the changes and efforts made by a few, overall greenhouse emissions steadily continued to rise. What else could I do to make a difference?

I revisited my daydream about a �human-�powered circumnavigation of the planet from a more serious perspective. Such a journey would garner much publicity, and this media attention could be leveraged to promote �zero-�emissions travel. If I could make it around the entire planet using my own muscles, it might inspire others to ride their bikes to work or walk to school. Suddenly, I realized that this expedition would be more than just a �once-�in-�anyone’s-�lifetime adventure. It could also be a loud and clear statement about the urgency of climate change, an action that would speak louder than mere rhetoric about the issue. I could chronicle the expedition in a book to convey the message to a wide audience.

I ran my finger over the surface of a globe. I tried to imagine the easiest route and how I might traverse the various regions. By the middle of 2002, I had decided that I would do it. I would attempt the first �muscle-�powered journey around our planet.

I felt somewhat like a child who declares he is going to fly to the moon. Although I had stated to myself that I would do it, and had every intention of carrying through, I still struggled to believe I would be successful. As the child starts clearing toys from the launching area, I began tapping on the computer, doing Google searches to glean some rudimentary information about what I was up against.

Because of these extreme nagging doubts, my initial preparations weren’t accompanied by the usual enthusiasm I feel when striving for a more simple and achievable goal such as building a small boat or planting a vegetable garden. Instead, I laboured on the project simply because I said I would. It felt as though I were begrudgingly working for the small part of my brain that felt success was a possibility.

An epic adventure!

Colin Angus set out to complete the first human-powered circumnavigation of the globe, setting out from his home in the Vancouver B.C. area. Partnering with a friend, their relationship in this two-man team fissures in Siberia and Angus forges ahead solo before meeting up with his fianc� Julie in Moscow.

Aside from the physical strain, the interpersonal challenges loom large in pulling off a feat like this. Angus undertakes this monumental task in order to highlight human-power, to raise consciousness about the environment and the perils of global warming.

The book is an entertaining adventure read, though oddly paced. With about 40 pages left, Colin and Julie are barely half-way across the Atlantic, which they crossed in a rowboat. In the remaining pages, they must complete their trans-Atlantic crossing and bicycle up through Central American, the United States and part of Canada. The balance of the book suffers somewhat by this once over lightly treatment.

Overall, though, BEYOND THE HORIZON is an uplifting and inspiring true life tale of persistence and endurance. RECOMMEND!

An adventure to be admired!

I enjoy reading books of personal struggle and triumph. Between a Rock and a Hard Place, Into Thin Air, Lost in the Amazon, Miracle in the Andes, The River of Doubt, etc. This book was as good as any of them. The writing was good, the tales and near tragedies were gripping, and the soap opera like side story added an interesting element. I am inspired by what Colin Angus attempted and what he was able to accomplish. A feat never before completed. Hats off to the man, his dream, and his drive!!! Buy this book and check out the others mentioned in the review, most notably Between a Rock and a Hard Place!

So good, I bought it again!

I flew though this book and ended up lending it to a professor, who also flew through it, and she then lent it elsewhere. my brother-in-law is an avid bike rider, and so I bought a good copy for him for the holidays. He just recently finished it, and also was a fan.
Recommended for adventurer type!

A Winner!

Imagine a character so completely depraved, degenerated and perverted that he makes Hannibal Lecter seem like a Sunday school teacher. Now imagine that character fueled by a mountain of cocaine and an ocean of vodka. Now take away any sensitivity he may have learned for others of a different race, gender, physical capability, social class, postal code or sexual preference. Make him believe that there is nothing so important as the pursuit of money, put him in a nice suit, give him an expense account and turn him loose on the world without a modicum of care about the consequences of his actions to himself or others.

Now if I told you that you were going to read a novel centered on such a character, you might expect it to be a horror novel, or a thriller, maybe a mystery or police procedural. You would probably not expect that it would be the funniest thing you've read in years.

I will caution you here: if you don't think humor can possibly mix with buckets of blood, vomit, urine, feces and semen, or if you couldn't possibly laugh where there is blatant bigotry, or if wretched excess offends you to the point where you lose your sense of humor, this might not be the book for you.

If, however, you're possessed of a strong stomach and aren't easily offended, you're in for a treat.

Insightful, acidic, vastly entertaining

There are lot of details woven into Niven's story. We get great insights into how talent is scouted, coaxed, cajoled and "discovered". In a deeply amusing and interesting story arc, Steven develops a girl band with virtually no talent in the hope that they can ride post-Spice Girls Girl Power to a multiplatinum hit. One fascinating section has Steven talking about the amount of cash it takes to maintain his lifestyle.

There was one overriding concern I had while reading this book - that the central protagonists' personality would end up overpowering the story itself. Magically it doesn't happen - and 'Kill Your Friends' ends up being one hugely entertaining read of lasting impact.

Sex, Drugs, Music & Violence. What more could you want from a book?

I absolutely loved this book. A friend of mine - who coincidentally worked in A&R for a very long time - gave me a copy and said it was "right up your alley", so I gave it a whirl.

I started reading Friday night and finished about two days later. When people say things like "I couldn't put it down" about a book, this is the one that they're talking about.

It's fast paced and the words just seem to roll out of the narrator at a pace equal to what my brain can process, which helped me churn through the book incredibly fast. I only had to stop a few times to look up some of the British slang that I wasn't familiar with (given that I'm American.)

Others complain that there's too much violence, sex and drugs. That's precisely what the record industry was in the '90s. Whether this book is some truth interspersed with fabricated aspects of the story or not, it's tough to tell. If this is *entirely* made up, John Niven is an even bigger genius than I originally thought.

As a writer, this book made me want to go back to the drawing board. I want to scrap my most recent manuscript and start over. I want to write with the passion, vision and creativity than Niven writes with and convey the same emotions, visions, and scenery that he does in this book.

It's such a fantastic read that I plan to read it again in the very near future.
