Read several devotions before deciding to gift this.

My 8 year old daughter received this as a Christmas gift, and the idea of a book of devotions is wonderful. ... But this book has many mature ideas that I am uncomfortable with her reading at her age - even with discussion afterward.

Flipping through several pages in January brings up: possibly abusive alcoholism in parents (Jan 1); drug abuse (Jan 6); cheating in school (Jan 10); abusive or deadbeat parents, drug use, alcohol use, sex (Jan 14); porn (Jan 30). While these may be valid things for a teenager to think and worry about, my daughter hasn't been exposed to any of that yet, and frankly, I don't really want to point out all the negatives in the world to her for a few more years.

I will hang onto the book, and re-read it when she is in Jr. High to see if it is more fitting, but for now it is just not age appropriate.

This book assumes that girls are dealing with alcohol, physically abusive parents, and sexually active. Not exactly what my 6 year old girl needs.

This book is presented beautifully and looked perfect for my 10 year old. As we worked through Januarys daily devotions we quickly realised that the adult themes of sex, drugs and even porn were totally unsuitable. Carolyn Larsen what are you thinking?

What a great book

I have tried many 100% juice guides but this is the first which contains recipes for delicious juices and an extra 3 day meal plan. This book made me realize the amount of nutrients lost in the transformation of fruits. I stumbled upon detoxification diets when I had severe allergies. I read that detoxification is the best way to cleanse your body; the liver, kidneys, stomach, and everything. This book assists in finding a diet that fits your needs. I tried detoxing diets from Dr. Oz and other resources but none of them suited me, so I gave this book a try, surprisingly the detoxing diet included in this book suited me perfectly. This book is very well written and formatted for Kindle. It covers everything about cold pressed juice and the reasons you should do it. It digs deep and address things like exercising while juicing. What you should do before and after starting a cleanse and what to expect every step of the way.

Well researched and expertly put together. I really enjoyed reading this and feel fully prepared to start my cold press juice cleanse. I highly recommend it!

I thought this book was poorly written, poorly edited with many errors in sentence structure. It lacks detail that would be crucial to doing an actual juice cleanse. I think this book is mis-represented and if I could get a refund I will pursue that.

Excellent for high school students

Having taught high school journalism and advised an award-winning publication for 12 years, I think this is my favorite of the many all-purpose texts that are out there. Is it the most comprehensive? No. Far from it. That doesn't matter to me. Most intro courses are going to be geared toward freshmen and sophomores and this book is perfect for that group. It breaks journalism down effectively for younger students and does a nice job giving them a vocabulary they can both understand and use. From "broccoli" to "gold coins," key concepts are presented in a way that sticks well with high school students--and not just the highest level kids.

Throughout, Streisel writes in a lively, approachable voice. If it is less formal and scholarly than in some textbooks, this doesn't come at the expense of dumbing down the material. I find the book to be just as effective with my senior editors as it is with freshmen who may or may not have a serious interest in journalism and that's no small feat.

Bonus kudos for the many excellent examples and for chapters on design and law that are short enough to be approachable for basic-level students yet comprehensive enough to use with veterans on a publication staff.

Downsides? Yeah, there are some. I think the book is a little pricey for its size (although, to be fair, it does retail for about half the price of larger, hardbound texts). Also, in places, it could be a little more visually appealing. Overall though, these are minor quibbles and this is, for the most part just what it claims to be--a very PRACTICAL guide for students and teachers alike.

For Very Young Students

I am beginning a stint as a high school newspaper adviser and purchased several of the titles on the market. This book seems geared to junior high or elementary school students; I think older kids would find the explanations and language condescending and simplistic. A chapter on interviewing begins with a story about how the author's college friend got all the girls because he was a good listener. According to this text, good stories are like pepperonis on a pizza. A discussion of "What is news?" begins with a page on who likes broccoli and who doesn't. These explanatory analogies get tiresome immediately. There is nothing per se wrong about the information presented, but the pitch underestimates the intelligence of high school students.

Not your typical textbook

This provides detailed (and interesting!) insights into the American penal system. Normally, I find textbooks to be bland, and to read like stereo instructions. In Total Confinement, Rhodes interjects a lot of narrative and storytelling with fact-based research, making the entire text accessible and easy to grasp. I agree with the other reviews, that this is a must-read for anyone wondering what prisons do to American society as a whole, and to the prison population itself.

This book is based on Williamson's discovery of A Course in Miracles , a self-help guide whose provenance she doesn't explain. Age 26 at the time and feeling lost and desperate after indulging in the excesses of the 1960s, the Jewish author had no real hope for inspiration from the course because of its Christian terminology. But, she writes in this guide to the guide, the program works "miracles" for herself and for others who adopt its principles. Her extrapolations may appeal to readers in need of spiritual sustenance, but one questions Williamson's advice to the gravely ill. When she encourages them, for example, to "write a letter to AIDS or cancer or whatever illness they might have, and tell it everything they feel"--even to fabricate "replies" from the disease--readers are likely to consider that a serious situation is trivialized. Using humorous personal narrative, Williamson explains how applying love to all difficulties, as advised by "The Course," can aid in healing. Some may find the theories and practices presented here somewhat off-putting (e.g., Williamson counsels people with AIDS to write letters to the disease, rather than use fear and hatred to fight it). However, New Age followers or fans of Gerald Jampolsky ( One Person Can Make a Difference , LJ 11/1/90) or Louise Hay ( You Can Heal Your Life , Hay House, 1984) will enjoy this title. A lesson in adjusting perception

I feared religion, feared succumbing to the opiate of the masses. The word "God" troubled me, even while I sought a deeper spirituality. Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit... I blindly closed my mind to anything in Christian terms. But I was fortunate enough to pick up this book at a time in my life when I was beginning to shed many of my judgements, and consider faith not by how others may abuse it or be shackled by it, but how it might empower me to find a deeper happiness. It all started with me re-stumbling upon a quote I read five years ago on how we feared not our inadequacy, but our strength. And it ended up with me finishing this book minutes ago and my mind screeching to a halt, "What? It's over? I need more!" Only the whole point of the book was telling me I don't need to read more, I just need to act on what resonated with me from the words so recently imbibed.

I rather doubt I'll ever consider myself Christian. But when you translate the concept of God from a bearded Old Testament crotchety and vengeful powerhouse to the raw and unadulterated purity of love... I don't need to read the Bible to find answers. When the idea of Jesus isn't so much the one and only Son of God, but a state of grace each and everyone of us can become through the shedding of fear... I can relate. When the word Christ is us used to speak to the fact that all of us are connected, rather than a fixation on crucifixion... I can open my mind a crack more. And the concept of the Holy Spirit as the guiding force that allows us to replace fear and its derivatives with love for ourselves and one another... alright, finally Christianity makes at least a lick of sense.

Does everything in these pages resonate to me? I'm not sure, but it doesn't need to. The whole point as there is no single right answer, beyond the fact that love is always the right answer. But going to church on Sunday, believing in Jesus, living a life of abstaining from all physical joys or looking upon others or ourselves with judgement and shame... not a prerequisite to finding wisdom in these pages. I would finish a chapter, and the whole world would seem to make more sense. Colors looked better, and I would sink into a feeling of peace is never felt before. The book calls my shift in perception a miracle. I don't think I'm capable of disagreeing on that point. As the author says, this is only the beginning, not the destination. I don't know if I'll read or undertake A Course in Miracles, but I do know that this companion, this interpretation, has changed my world for the better.

Make a change in your life simply by willing it to happen!

I had been in a dead end relationship for a good number of years. I wanted to keep it going but the other side of me wanted to just end the relationship. I hoped and prayed that one day the relationship would cease to exist. It was then that I came across the is wonderful book, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of a Course in Miracles. I quickly took to it and thought that all these years I had the power all along to end the unhappiness that I had been experiencing. I was so relieved yet happy to know that the universe was not in charge of me changing but instead it was all in my hands to make the needed changes.

Soon after reading this book, I came along to the other book called Manifestation Magic: Attracting Abundant Wealth, Incredible Health, Great Relationships, and Limitless Success Into Your Life. This book was a lot more in detail about the various things that we are able to change and turn around in our lives. The biggest of these is that we actually have the power to reverse illness. This concept totally blew my mind and made me wonder what else I had been missing out on in life. The power is within all of us and after reading this book, I was quickly able to see ways that we are able to affect the course of our life on a regular basis.

While these books alone can give you a lot of insight, these two together help to unlock the whole mystery that is set in front of a person. Regardless of what the real secret is that unlocks all of the mysteries of life, you need to just know that the answer is a lot closer than you might expect it to be.

Great book gor our times.

Great book for our times. How we can change our lives by loving ourselves and others who are here to learn and to experience this world just as we are. By trusting in a Higher Power that created and manages universes to create and manage a new improved life for us. By surrendering our manic control of which we have very little of anyway, and focusing (remembering) on what we really do have control over, our attention. Returning our attention to each other with consideration, compassion, understanding, (as we would want for ourselves) and most of all, with the most powerful and beautiful force that exists, Love.
