Meh.

I saw the cover of this book in a book store and thought that it might be interesting. I liked the concepts but found the ending a tad disappointing. (Possible spoilers ahead) It kept my interest and I definitely finished in a few days. However, I was hoping to see the main character (Niles) come up with an awesome idea for his movie pitch. That's the main reason for the storyline is his struggle between a fictional world and the real one (which does not meet his standards). But in the end, I feel like the character just gave up. I would have liked to have seen his story fail or be a success. Not just have him decided to quit being himself and walk off into "the sunset" as it were. I felt the end was a let down and a cheat for the reader. Having read the synopsis' for his other books (based on pulp characters like Doc Savage/The Shadow/ Zorro), they sound much more interesting than this one turn out to be. So my final remark is, "Meh".

Modern fiction, rather good

I was interested by the subject matter, but loved the stories within the stories. There were a lot of modern references that may or may not stand the test of time but it was a good read. Its overall concept of fictional characters and being real are great. The resulting idea of realism was rather fascinating as well. As a sci fi enthusiast, it overlaps the ideas of clones and false realities. Once I got about half way through, I cranked it out! I do recommend this, if you like to contemplate your sense of self you will enjoy it as well.

A decent read for enjoyers of fantasy or science fiction

First Impression: I fell victim to another awesome book cover. Thankfully what was contained within was worthwhile reading, which is always a bonus. The Fictional Man is a story of identity, neurosis and pop culture. I enjoyed my time within these wall and I related to the main character quite a bit as I am also an introvert who wishes he was more assertive!

Summary Of The Book:

Niles Golan is an author, he was a half decent one but now he is sliding away from the public view after sending out one embarrassing novel after another. Golan's main novel series is about Kurt Powers, an ex lawyer turned non-nonsense private investigator. After 17 novels under his belt Golan wants to revitalise his character on the big screen and in real life. Golan lives in a world where cloning technology exists and it is quite an established and almost common practice. Society rejects the idea of cloning real-life people as it would lead to problems and most likely increase crime rates. They do however believe that it would be acceptable to use this cloning ability to bring to life fictional characters. Golan wants to invigorate his career and his life by bringing Kurt Powers to real life to be his best friend and his meal ticket.

As Golan has let himself and his career slide he isn't able to just create Kurt Powers by himself, he needs a studio to fund the project and eventually his first movie. After approaching a studio he is offered a project, not the one he wants but he is led to believe that this may be the first step on the journey to a freshly made Kurt Powers. The project is to re-imagine his favourite childhood movie 'The Delicious Mr Doll', a cheesy parody of James Bond with the smuttiness and silliness turned up to 11. Armed with his incredibly introvert personality and his fictional friend Bob, Golan must get to the root of this movies origin and write a box office smash so he can get what he really wants.

Set in a world where pop culture literally walks the streets and the line between reality and fiction is blurred to the max, The Fictional Man is a fun, neurotic and odd novel that will make you question if you really want to meet some of your heroes or just leave them within the pages of your favourite book.

My Review:

The Fictional Man is a book that pulls a lot of separate concepts that appear across literature and pop culture and amalgamates them into an amusing, semi-complex story of a man's undoing. The author takes cloning, espionage, sex, internal monologues and fiction and splices them together, I enjoyed this book and not just because I am a dork just like Niles Golan...

First the positives...The story was original. I found the concept of an author chasing the origin of a story that has been so stretched, mangled and warped that you can't believe how the end result came about vastly enjoyable. Also the undoing of the introvert, uptight, dorkish and unpleasant Niles Golan was probably the best part of this book. The author set up this unbearable and frustrating character and then picked him apart slowly over the course of this episode and left him almost reborn. Niles is a funny character, he's a part of all of us at some point in our lives. He is the bad choices we make, the silly decisions and the internal voice we all wish we had the courage to fulfil (well myself at least). The other cast members all have their place and they add plenty to this story, Bob the fictional best friend who tries to settle the argument that 'Fictionals' are real people. The ex-wife who tests Golan every step of the way and makes him question himself. The various and absurd characters that make the reader smile or think WTF i.e his douche bag agent or the woman who pretends to be fictional. This book made me laugh!

Dislikes...there was not much I didn't like in this piece, it is not perfect by any means but I didn't find myself frustrated, bored or unchallenged. There were a few themes and parts that I did not find interesting, the whole no sex between Fictionals and real people was a bit phoney. The concept of cloning fictional characters is questionable but it was core element of the book so i embraced it. I found it hard to care about Niles to begin with, but once his character started to break apart I found myself rooting for him. This book is cheesy, disturbing and weird, but it is also charming and everyone can relate somehow.

The main themes included are identity, cloning, culture and humanity. The author conveyed these themes well and I think the only weak theme was the cloning, but cloning is always abused in books and television as it is a versatile and shady practice. The authors development was superb, I genuinely saw Golan change and peel of his undesirable characteristics and leave him as a blank slate, taking life one day at a time.

Overall The Fictional Man is a decent and highly readable piece of fiction that all fantasy or science fiction readers at least will appreciate. This novel is grimy, warped and a lot of fun!

JON MILLER has 20 years of experience in the field of kaizen. He is the CEO of the Kaizen Institute Consulting Group. He was co-founder and CEO of Gemba Research before merging it with the Kaizen Institute. Jon is the author of numerous articles, and translated and edited Taiichi Ohno's Workplace Management as well as contributing to other McGraw-Hill Professional books, including Gemba Kaizen, Second Edition, and Kaizen in Logistics and Supply Chains.

MIKE WROBLEWSKI has more than 25 years of experience in industrial engineering, manufacturing management, and kaizen. He is a Director of the Kaizen Institute USA. Mike is a popular keynote speaker at national conferences, sharing his insights and experiences leading kaizen.

JAIME VILLAFUERTE has 20 years of experience in the strategic and tactical deployment of continuous improvement. He is a Lean Six Sigma Director at Jabil, Inc., where he leads the development and deployment of Lean Six Sigma transformation, reaching 165,000+ employees in 33 countries. Jaime is the author of The Lean 6 Sigma Deployment Memory Jogger.

Provides a great understanding of what Kaizen means to a culture.

Amazing book about the true power of kaizen. Not just the talk of events but the levels of involvement for the daily kaizen through relentless continuous improvement to tackling big projects via Project Kaizen, and can't forget Support Kaizen either. Getting into the importance of building people around learning, developing, and experimenting. Jon Miller, Mike Wroblewski, & Jaime Villafuetre provide great insight of providing examples at various organizations such as NUMMI, FastCap, ThedaCare, Vibco, & Virginia Mason MedicalCenter. I can't forget Kaas Tailored, as that was one of my favorite stories to read in this book. Such energy, eagerness, and drive for real kaizen.

What I can say I learned is that: " if no plan, no vision, and no standard in doing things right...then there is really no chance for kaizen". Also, engaging people, developing skills, the importance of PDCA and the 10 core kaizen beliefs. I like the illustration of traditional vs kaizen culture benchmarks, as i can relate to the struggles with traditional thinking. I've been around companies where kaizen was taught in a more traditional way with more of the attitude of a "project" and "done"...now "go kaizen elsewhere". What was missing is the deep understanding of how to drive daily kaizen and sustain it through a disciplined approach to developing people, being at the gemba, and understanding the leadership importance to support it. I know that I need to read through this book a couple of times to keep learning. So much helpful info in understanding kaizen culture. I plan to eventually read Gemba Kaizen.

A great start

This book is a good first step on addressing the cultural issues within the organization.

It addresses some issues with why Toyota need not be such a unique Lean organization, or that only the Japanese can be lean. This is valuable discussion for skeptical organizations.

There is some discussion on how to use some of the lean tools to solve for cultural transformation.

However, the book feels a little unfinished. Perhaps because it isn't something that can be neatly summed into a 9 step process just yet, it feels like we've been issued a challenge rather than a roadmap.

The mix of personal narratives and some scholarly work is good for those who've been at this for a while or for someone who may need to understand a little more before jumping into their first steps at lean.

I highly recommend this book. It is a great material. It gives you a clear perspective of the foundations to build an adaptive culture. More than ever organizations need to reinvent itself to keep competitiveness and an adaptive culture is the way to achieve it. A difference of other books about lean that are focused just on the technics this book goes further to explain the rational of the kaizen culture. I am applying this book in my work in leadership development to improve employee engagement.

The discovery of Vygotsky's work rates amongst the most significant developments in psychology in the second half of the 20th century. However, the insight that persons as psychological beings are socially created can be taken in more than one way. In this collection of studies, the growing independence of the individual from its sociogenetic environment through Vygotsky's zone of proximal development is highlighted as 'internalization'. The division of the collection into reports of work on how symbolic acts are internalized has allowed the authors to cover a great deal of ground from basic structures of moral intuitions to the conceptual foundations of adolescent ways of life.

The book is timely indeed, presenting solid empirical work tracing the growth of competence through detailed analysis of the activities in the zone of proximal development to complement what until recently has been a predominantly theoretical literature. The breadth of the work described here illustrates the extraordinary range of possibilities opened up by the sociogenetic approach. It is also important as a corrective to what I believe has been an unwise deletion of a robust sense of personal identity from the foundations of psychology.

There continue to be tensions within the generally Vygotskian way of looking at development, and a great virtue of this book is the editors' willingness to confront and resolve some of them. Personal agency and activity cannot give way to a wholly socially driven account of action. In the end, there is no favored directionality in person-culture relations because each is a dynamically shaped product of the other. I am confident that this collection will have a powerfully stimulating effect on developmental studies because it not only brings to light the creative tensions that are to be seen in the approach, but demonstrates the illuminating qualities of the insights that can be drawn from it.

Nothing is more interesting than to see yourself through the eyes of an outsider.
The UnDutchables is a very revealing treatise about us... This book in a very exact yet funny way discloses all the secrets about us that we really would have preferred to keep to ourselves. In other words, they hang out the dirty linen...

The authors have clearly looked much farther than wooden shoes and tulips... Even the way we stir sugar in our coffee has not escaped their notice and not until you read this book from cover to cover do you understand how much our behavior, that we consider as completely normal ourselves, borders on insanity for a non-Netherlander.

Everything in it is true, and only the humor with which it is written makes it at all palatable for us.

Great read! Hilarious but true!
At least for the part we refer to as "Holland" see the outstanding Youtube video "Holland vs Netherlands" to learn more about these lowlands.
I am born and raised in the Netherlands (Maastricht) but always wanted to leave this country because I did not like the culture and habits the author accurately describes in this book. The Dutch are nice folks when they travel and when you visit as a tourist. But when you have to live there and fit in its a different story.

Unless you come to Maastricht its like a small version of Paris. If they could anexate it to Belgium I might want to come back ;-)

An amusing look at Holland, tongue in cheek

I read this book before marrying a Dutch man, and wanting to think only positive thoughts about my soon to be new country, was hurt by some of the writings in the book. After living in Holland for ten years, I have to agree with most of what is in the book. The Dutch are passive-aggressive people,liking you to your face or for a few months, but when not quickly learning their language, they become distant and cliquish. I tried to fit in with going to church, joining groups, and whatever anyone suggested, but I seemed to be on the fringe most of the time. My age had a lot to do with since I was 59, youngish but still not able to join the young people in bars and concerts to establish myself. I did go to college to learn the language, a horrendous experience since they were trying out a new way to teach....it didn't work! So, in rereading the book, I now am amused that it is so true about most things i.e. dog poop anywhere and everywhere. I asked a Dutch friend why she did not pick up her dog's droppings and she said "that is why I pay for the dog license. Let them clean it up". I was scolded constantly for wanting English translations for medical terms. "Why don't you go back to America?" was the standard comment in the medical society, so I ended up taking my hubby to every appointment, where they then treated me more civilly. As I left the country to return with hubby to California, my doctor said he was sorry he treated me as he did. "We look at foreigners as if they are here to get our welfare money". All in all, I would do it all again, but read more and not think the UnDutchables is an unfair concept of the Netherlanders. It is true, but they are wonderful people once they accept you and that you truly want to be a part of them. Reading this book will provide many laughs, and if you have lived through some of it, some sad moments of remembering, but .I heartily recommend this book as a gift to anyone even remotely interested or connected to the Netherlands. I have bought this book as a gift for many, and my Dutch relatives by marriage love it. Yes, the Dutch are tolerant, even when being joked about.

Remember, take all of the reading with a grain of salt and know that a lot of it is an exaggeration, written years ago and every now and then updated. Every country has it foibles and the Dutch have fewer than some countries. Don't use this book as a travel book but as a humorous (in parts) way to understand another countries cultures and traditions.

A Hoot!

This book is hilarious! I am laughing constantly throughout. Having just returned from a visit to the Netherlands, I am finding this book to be perfect in its descriptions of those crazy Dutchies.......My daughter lives in Rotterdam with her Dutch boyfriend. He's not really as amused as we are, however, by these descriptions, but she and I love it! A great book for anyone with ties to that unique little part of the world.

The Internet's original architecture was based on four design principles: modularity, layering, and two versions of the celebrated but often misunderstood end-to-end arguments. But today, the Internet's architecture is changing in ways that deviate from the Internet's original design principles, removing the features that have fostered innovation and threatening the Internet's ability to spur economic growth, to improve democratic discourse, and to provide a decentralized environment for social and cultural interaction in which anyone can participate. If no one intervenes, network providers' interests will drive networks further away from the original design principles. One of the most important books in tech policy in a decade

This is an important and brilliant book, which I consider required reading for anyone interested in or serious about the Internet or innovation.

I have written a review of this book on my blog ([...]) and on the Huffington Post.

As I say there, this book is one of the very few books in the field of Internet policy that is in the same league as Larry Lessig's Code: And Other Laws of Cyberspace, Version 2.0, in 2000, and Yochai Benkler's The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom, in 2006, in terms of its originality, depth, and importance to Internet policy and other disciplines. I expect the book to affect how people think about the Internet; about the interactions between law and technical architectures in all areas of law; about entrepreneurship in general. I also think her insights on innovation economics, which strike me as far more persuasive than lawyers' usual assumptions, should influence "law and economics" thinking for the better.

Books this good don't come along every day--or even every year-and I'm already late to the praise-party. Harvard Law professor Larry Lessig (the trail-blazing cyberlaw champion) recommended it in the New York Times this week; Susan Crawford (a law professor who served as a top White House advisor) recommended it in an op-ed in Salon/GigaOm yesterday; Brad Burnham, the venture capitalist who was featured earlier this week in the NYT's Room for Debate, also posted an endorsing review on his blog. MIT engineering professor David Reed (one of the key architects of the IP protocol, inventor of the UDP protocol) praises it on the book jacket.

It is not easy material--the Internet's technologies and how innovation actually evolves--but she writes for a general audience, not a technologist or lawyer, and you will learn a lot from, and be challenged by, the ideas in this book.

Run, don't walk, to buy this book

I want to very highly recommend this book. Various authors, advocates, scholars, and businesses have spoken about the economic impacts of the Internet, but to date there hasn't been a detailed economic accounting of what may happen if/when ISPs monitor and control the flow of data across their networks. van Schewick has filled this gap.

Her book traces economic impacts associated with changing the Internet's structure from one enabling any innovator to design an application or share content online to a structure where ISPs must first authorize access to content and design key applications (e.g. P2P, email, etc) in house. Barbara draws heavily from Internet history literatures and economic theory to buttress her position that a closed or highly controlled Internet not only constitutes a massive change in the architecture of the 'net, but that this change would be damaging to society's economic, cultural, and political interests. She argues that an increasingly controlled Internet is the future that many ISPs prefer, and supports this conclusion with economic theory and the historical actions of American telecommunications corporations.

van Schewick begins by outlining two notions of the end-to-end principle undergirding the 'net, a narrow and broad conception, and argues (successfully, in my mind) that ISPs and their interrogators often rely on different end-to-end understandings in making their respective arguments to the public, regulators, and each other. This reliance on differing notions of end-to-end have led the defenders of these differing shades of the end-to-end principle to speak past one another. Further, divergent understandings of the end-to-end architectural discussion has created, and continues to create, rifts between engineers, between those who were (and remain) central to the development of the 'net more generally, and between those publishing technically informed economic writings about the Internet.

After differentiating between the narrow and broad approaches to end-to-end, van Schewick identifies the impacts of different Internet architectures on the costs of innovation, the resulting organizational makeup of innovating parties, and the effects architecture has on the competition of complementary goods (e.g. VoIP, filesharing, email, etc as opposed to the actual hardware composing the Internet). After laying this groundwork, van Schewick works through how deviations from the 'broad' end-to-end argument affect innovation and the consequences of centralized versus decentralized application development and content distribution. The book concludes with an analysis of the public versus private interests in network architectures, with the author asserting that citizens and their public representatives must understand the impacts of architecture on the Internet's future. ISPs are attempting to better control and monetize their networks, and these attempts may undermine the possibilities of innovation while sacrificing the long-term evolution of the 'net so that companies can realize short-term profits. Such sacrifices must be critically interrogated by a public that is increasingly relying on digital communications in all facets of life and business.

This is a heavy read, a read made heavier if you haven't spent some time reading economic theory, elements of the network neutrality debates of the past decade, and a little on the evolution of American telecommunications in the past two decades. This said, the author generally does a terrific job in walking the reader through every facet of her argument, using examples and sidenotes to expand and clarify more troublesome sections of the book (especially as it relates to economic theory and approaches to innovation). I highly recommend this book - it's worth every penny that it will cost you. It also includes an extensive set of citations and reference list (about 160 pages worth) that will be helpful for any subsequent research or reading beyond the text itself.

If I have a criticism of the book it's that it tends to be very American-centric. While the principles contained in the book remain general enough that readers can lay the theoretical model she traces upon the telecommunications landscape of non-US states, this is a bit of work that non-American readers will have to do when examining their own telecommunications landscape through her lens. This may somewhat limit the book's immediate guidance to policy makers, policy analysts, economists, Internet governance scholars, and concerned/interested citizens more generally, but not so much that any of these readers should stay away.

I have a suspicion that this book will become one of the centrepieces for Internet governance literatures in coming years, and likely to be as influential Benkler's The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom with regards to the economics of the Internet. If issues around Internet governance, innovation, and control are your cup of tea then consider this book an absolute must buy.

Didn't understand the book

I got this book on Fred Wilson's recommendation. I found it academic and confusing. Which doesn't mean that it isn't a good or important book. But it was inaccessible to me. I work in the internet space as a digital marketer and I was hoping to learn more about the technical underpinnings of the net and how that relates to innovation (the title of the book after all).
