Sweet, Informative, and Inspiring

This book (or as the author calls it, a longer essay) on the subject of Family Purity was clear, informative, and refreshing.

I especially enjoyed the explanation of niddah (unclean/impure) status--and how it has nothing to do with the value of a person or item, but only it's legal status. For a feminist brain, it was nice to read that women aren't unclean, unworthy beings. This is a topic usually glossed over in other books, which use the word impure or unclean but don't discuss that very problematic issue for women.This author seems to be aware of the very negative connotations of such word choices--and how that might turn others off from pursuing Family Purity in their own lives.

For instance, the major implications of cognitive psychology to assessment are discussed throughout the book, such as the differences between declarative and procedural knowledge, the nature of problem solving, and options for assessing each. Similarly, in recognition that informal assessments represent a high proportion of classroom assessment activities, a full chapter is devoted to using informal observations and questions, and another chapter addresses their use to integrate assessment into instruction.

ORGANIZATION

Developing and Using Classroom Assessments is organized into four parts. Part I provides the teacher with a framework for assessing students. Components of this framework include determining how results of an assessment will be used, establishing the behaviors that indicate whether or not learning has taken place, gathering evidence to determine whether an assessment is valid, and establishing whether it is reasonable to generalize from observed performance to unobserved performance. These components of the assessment framework are illustrated with practical and familiar examples. This assessment framework is then applied extensively in Parts II, III, and IV of the book.

Parts II and III are concerned with the development, administration, and scoring of assessments. Part II focuses on written tests, including the essay, short-answer, and objectively scored formats. In Chapters 6 through 9, the reader learns when and how to use each format, including nontrivial attributes that should be built into each type of test item. The reader immediately practices what has been learned by critiquing a combination of well-constructed and faulty test items. Chapter 10 is concerned with helping students take written tests.

Part III focuses on alternative assessments, including informal observations and questions, performance assessments, and portfolios. Books on assessment often provide a cursory treatment of the casual observation and questioning of students, even though these informal assessments provide the basis for most formative evaluations in the classroom. Chapter 11 discusses these assessments in some detail. It identifies qualities critical to casual questioning and observation and illustrates their relevance through analogies to social interactions with which readers are very familiar. Two chapters are devoted to performance assessments. Chapter 12 addresses several factors to consider when using this powerful assessment medium, including characteristics, options for scoring, and things to do before creating each performance assessment. Chapter 13 describes in detail procedures to follow when creating performance assessments. The creation of five performance assessments is illustrated. Chapter 14 describes how to use portfolios to integrate assessment and instruction, including how to design portfolios and how to guide their use by students.

Part IV focuses on the use of assessments. Chapter 15 is concerned with integrating assessment into instruction. Particular attention is given to specific roles of assessment within cognitivist and constructivist approaches to learning. Chapter 16 describes how to report student performance to parents and others outside the classroom. Issues addressed include inferring what a student knows from what was observed, establishing performance standards, and assigning grades. Chapter 17 addresses the interpretation of students' scores on standardized tests. A significant section helps the reader evaluate common uses of standardized tests that directly affect classroom activities.

I ordered this book for my graduate course in reading education. This is the tool for assessment. It is comprehensive and contains a huge amount of information on the subject of assessment. You name it it's in this book. The book is also well organized so that you can go straight to any topic you are researching without having to reread the entire book. It is organized into sections that contain chapters about a specific subject. The chaters break the information down into even smaller components so that you only research the subject you are interested in at that particular time, and again you don't have to reread the entire textbook. For example, Part 1 is entitlted How to establish a framework for assessing your students. It contains chapters 2 through 5 explaining in detail how to measure, gather evidence, generalize performance, etc. It's my official go to book for reference and research. I do not intend to sell it back.

Really average book

I had to use this book for a graduate educational assessment course. The book uses a lot of doublespeak and circular language. It also seems to be woefully short on examples. Several chapters need supporting discussion of the topic (i.e. Chapter 5 Generalizability theory would benefit from a discussion (or at least a comparison) on Classical Test Theory). Although, I believe the creation of accurate, reliable, and consistent measurements is imperative, this book is more geared for scientific creation of assessments than it is for high school testing.

Luca Turin was born in 1953 and educated in France, Italy and the UK. He is the author of many scientific publications as well as a much-praised perfume guide. He is the subject of an award-winning BBC Horizon documentary and a biography, The Emperor of Scent.

Fun from so many perspectives

This is one strangely, amazingly, delightful book. Turin's writing and his metaphors, his incredibly clever mix of high and pop culture and science are just priceless - I have never encountered anything like it. Although, full disclosure - I am a chemist, and I do wonder how much a reader who has not had some exposure to organic chemistry could appreciate it. But then again, half of his cultural references probably went right over my head so hopefully anyone not too science-phobic would get enough to have a great time with this book.

Now, a bit more wonky:
Turin did a fantastic job of convincing me that "molecular shape" cannot solely determine scent, as is, I think, widely accepted. I think this highlights a phenomenon that I have never heard discussed - scientists tend to accept as true whatever is the best theory available for any given purpose. The good ones are happy to take a better theory if it comes along, but until then, we go with what we've got - and sweep the dirt under the rug. We find it easier to admit we were wrong than that we are clueless.

SPOILER ALERT: if you are a scientist who plans to read this book, maybe stop reading at this point and please return after you read the book....
Unfortunately, Turin's own theory is lots of fun but, ironically, maybe an even better illustration of the problem of ignoring facts that don't fit the theory. If vibrational frequencies played an important role in olfaction, wouldn't extensive isotopic substitution completely change a molecule's smell? But the converse, when isotopic substitution does alter smell somewhat, does not argue that vibrational frequencies play any role, at least of the type he suggests. Isotopic substitution can have lots of subtle effects - including on binding - unrelated to the "spectroscopy" in Turin's theory. So, even after hearing only Turin's side of the story, I am convinced that the mainstream community is right about him being wrong. On the other hand he may also be right about them being wrong - and I'm sure his work is a lot more entertaining than theirs!

Follow-up: I just perused the paper by Turin et al. www.pnas.org/cgi/doi/10.1073/pnas.1012293108 PNAS | March 1, 2011 | vol. 108 | no. 9 | 3797-3802 The claim that "flies trained to discriminate against the normal or deuterated isotopes of a compound, selectively avoid the corresponding isotope of a different odorant" is very impressive! The paper seems like beautiful and important work, and even if the molecular vibration-sensing theory is wrong, they surely seem to be on to something.

Fun book that describes the history and chemistry of perfumes!

Luca Turin has produced a wonderful volume on the world of perfume and the chemistry behind it.

The pages are packed with personal stories and wonderfully refreshing insights from Luca Turin's decades in the perfume business.

The material is very approachable, and I learned a lot reading the book.

One caveat, while this did not remove any stars for me, some people might be upset by his premise that we smell fragrances based on a complex vibrational analysis using quantum effects in the olfactory sensors.

I'm not convinced, but that did not spoil the book for me.

My favorite part of the book was the description of the various base scent categories and the types of molecules that made up the family of scents.

Fun writeup by a perfume fan but watch out for big science & conceptual errors--this is author's passion project, not fact.

The hardcover is different from the paper back--some typographical errors fixed. But for big science buffs looking for sound facts, there seems to be quite a few chemistry errors and invalid scientific concepts contained that haven't yet been corrected.

For the random perfume and scent buff, this could be a curious tease into the science. However, for trained perfumery professionals looking for sound science and information, this is NOT the book for you--as I personally discovered. Turin claims that ‘‘reading
all that matters in structure-odour relations takes a few months’’ is a gross underestimate and could explain the confusion caused by some of the chemistry errors. Its also important to remember that the author is a fan of fragrance but admits early that he has never had any chemistry training when talking about the "science of smelling."

I admire his passion and enjoyed hearing his vibrational theory (as that is more his expertise) but just a warning out to those looking for validated information based on training or experience

Thank you, Dr. Miller!

I came to this book at the recommendation of a physician as I struggle to help my teenage daughter manage her gut-driven autoimmune issues, which include food sensitivity-driven hyper permeable gut and anaphylactic shock and multiple incidents of anaphylactic shock, and most recently a severe and life-altering vasculitis. Her rheumatologist, immunologist, and gastroenterologist call her the mystery girl, but her integrative physician told us to focus on food and what her body tells us. Enter Farmacology, which is life changing for my family. We already ate "organic" and thought we were keeping heavy doses of hormones, antibiotics, processing/chemicals, modern gluten, and processed sugar out of her and our bodies. After reading Farmacology, I'm convinced we aren't, and that we're missing vital microbes and even helpful bacterias etc., so we're refocusing on knowing our food growers and growing food ourself in a more biodynamic model, and on eliminating the heavily homogenized/pasteurized milk sold on our chain stores shelves in favor of locally sourced and less processed milk, and less of it altogether. There's so much I could say about the intelligence, curiosity, common sense, caring, and readability of this book, but I'm sure you get the picture: I loved it and appreciated it. Highly recommended.

I basically just want to agree with the majority here. This is a wonderful book full of information that all of us should be learning about the foods we are eating, and how better to grow it. The forays into her meetings with those she interviews for the book are delightful.

The only reason I dropped it to 4 stars was to warn those that haven't done any research on food, gardening, or even organic gardening and how it affects our health may find it a tad too technical. I had some problems grasping a few of the ideas. But then again that's why I liked it so much. It made me want to go out and find more answers when I had questions.

I definitely agree with the reviews that hope that more in the medical community will read and heed the advice in this book!

To be fair I did pick this up on a phenomenal sale on Amazon for $1.99. I'm not sure if I would have gambled on it at full price. But I would have missed out tremendously if I hadn't!

Fascinating book. Highly recommended for healthcare workers like me.

As a specialist physician, I am far-removed from preventative and holistic medicine. In addition, I have been trained to evaluate and treat patients in a very compartmentalized fashion. Reading Dr. Miller's book allowed me to see disease and my own health in a fresh way. I enjoyed her personal style and appreciated her ability to integrate varied health issues into a cohesive work.

About the Author

James Corner Field Operations is an award-winning, international landscape architecture, urban and public realm design firm based in New York City. The practice is renowned for strong contemporary design across a variety of project types and scales, from large urban districts and complex post-industrial sites, to small well-crafted, detail design projects. James Corner is recipient of the National Design Award and the Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award, among others.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro is an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, the visual arts and the performing arts. The firm established its identity through theoretical and self-generated projects before coming to international prominence through projects such as Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the recently opened Broad Museum. For their commitment to merging art, architecture, and culture, founding partners Diller and Scofidio were the first in architecture to be recognized with the MacArthur Foundation "genius" award.

Coming from someone who helped write a book on the High Line, this book is my favorite High Line book since Joel Sternfeld's book Walking The High Line. It captures the essence of the whole project from past to present to future.

The High Line is a visually exciting and intriguing view of preservation in NYC. It presents the development of a natural area of NYC, where trains blew soot and men left human castoffs to accumulate. Some professors in architectural schools in the City dreamed their students would enjoy working on this mile and one-half line where rotting rail ties gave food for bugs and birds, and plants, and grasses, and insects and birds came to live and propagate. Joshua David and Robert Hammond felt called to save the High Line for the people of NYC. Their passion and entrepreneurial spirit, and their innocence about the amount of effort needed to bring this about fueled this project and brought many people and organizations together. Most noteworthy, I believe, was the role of the then Commissioner of City Planning, Amanda Burden an advocate for the project. The project took ten years. This book documents all the "ups and downs," the tears and joys, and finally the great sense of accomplishment. Now there was a place on the west side of Manhattan where city dwellers could walk, sit and read, enjoy the flowers and grasses, and quiet found here.
Pictures of its development are engrossing. Everything was photographed from its dying grasses, to its abandoned children’s carts and toys to its polluted soil. Reports of phases of the project are included, as well as summaries of reports, pictures of the stages of clean-ups and planting of grasses, and of workers with their long shadows as the day lengthens. Other countries are planning their own high-lines reusing post-industrial infrastructure.
Amazon has given us an excellent price for this wonder. For those of us who love the City, it is a treasure as is its reality.

Good Resource!

Love these short passages that are accompanied by teaching points which include both skills and strategies. Passages and follow-up questions are challenging, and just right to use for 3rd grade instruction. This gives me the opportunity to model my thinking on a short piece daily and has become an integral part of my reading program.

Moderately Useful

These daily activities have a very similar form to the workbooks of other grades. Because of this I am able to use them as differentiated warm-ups so that my below-level students are still getting work with similar skills during the first few minutes of class and my students won't be sensitive to the different material.

Some of the skills developed and some of the kinds of questions here are a little out of date and modern students will often have laughable answers to some of them. (For instance, the answer to any question that asks "What reference source would you look in to find..." is always answered with "The internet" in my class).

Still, these are a reasonably valuable, standardized tool.
