Poetry. African American Studies. Women's Studies. "Bettina Judd's phenomenal debut poetry collection, PATIENT., is about recovery in many senses: recovery of the subjectivity of several historical figures, through the recovery, reconstitution, and telling of their stories--among them Anarcha Westcott, Betsey Harris, Lucy Zimmerman, Joice Heth, Saartjie Baartman, and Henrietta Lacks, who were infamously 'patients' or subjects of inspection and 'plunder' by, among others, J. Marion Sims, the controversial gynecologist, and P.T. Barnum, showman and circus founder. Sims (and the speculum) and Barnum are the featured antagonists in many of these flawlessly empathetic poems, but an unnamed speaker who adds a contemporary voice to the lyric chorus implicates those in charge of her care during a present-day hospital stay at Johns Hopkins--suggesting the linkage of modern medical treatment to the traumas vulnerable Black women, enslaved and not, suffered at the hands of unethical scientists and physicians in earlier eras.

In the collection's opening poem, the speaker reckons, '...verdicts come in a bloodline' and she determines 'to recover' from 'an ordeal with medicine' by 'learn[ing] why ghosts come to me.' She ends her testimony by asking, 'Why am I patient?' (Read that line in however many nuanced ways you want.) In this profoundly layered witnessing, the subject might be 'in the dark ghetto of my body,' or 'an idea of metaphors that live where bodies cannot.' Yet even as Judd vividly evokes the precise brutalities visited upon the Black female body and psyche--letting us see and hear women who 'quieted / broke into many pieces'--these poems also speak of 'shedding something,' 'another kind of sloughing.' Ultimately, PATIENT. enacts a healing and move toward wholeness, recovery of, as one speaker puts it, 'spirit [that] flees the body and / its treacherous / tearing.'"--Sharan Strange

Review
"This...is the equation that runs throughout Patient. The weight of history is a punitive force." -Southern Humanities Review

"Patientis not just the sad past. Judd's ire is not simply historical, how would that be possible. These poems hum and pulse like the air around a transformer during a heat wave.
These haunting poems are brave and bloody and bound to guilty truths that Judd artfully turn to balm.Patientis a book you can love, admire, extol."- Michael Dennis

From the Back Cover
In Patient. Bettina Judd beautifully (and horrifically) draws on historical evidence of nineteenth-century medical experimentation on black women, scholarly explorations of the body and the archive, and personal medical history. The result is haunting in its insistence on laying bare these stories as they not only articulate experiences of the past but also resonate deeply with black women's experiences with the U.S. medical complex in the present. Patient. is a brilliant meditation on race, gender, and science and a thrilling anthem to black women's self-knowledge. --Elsa Barkley Brown, Associate Professor of History and Women's Studies, University of Maryland, College Park

J. Marion Sims, the legendary, now controversial, 19th century gynecologist looms large in Bettina Judd's recent collection Patient. Sophisticated, complex, haunting, Patient. beckons readers to remember, to feel, to think deeply, to discover, to probe. Slavery's stench, the bodies of Black women, death, scientific racism, memory--these themes link the poems in extraordinary ways. Judd is a masterful new poet. Patient. is unforgettable!!--Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Founding Director and Anna Julia Cooper Professor of Women's Studies, Spelman College

Joice Heth. Lucy Zimmerman. Betsey Harris. Anarcha Wescott. Bettina Judd ensures you will remember the names of four women assaulted by science, violated by curiosity--survivors of physical invasion and torturous experiments. She presents their dignity, heretofore denied, as imagined in their own voices in conversation and parallel with a modern speaker, similarly (coldly) ensnared by a medical machine powered by detachment at best, cruelty at worst. Judd re-centers the narrative, however, to where it belongs--on the person(s) confronted, examined, in pain--not on the problem to be studied or solved. In visceral language that indicts, worships, haunts, and empowers, Patient. illuminates "a dynasty, a bloodline, a body" imbued with the full human spectrum of emotion and brilliance.--Khadijah Queen, author of Conduit and Black Peculiar

Bettina Judd's stunning poetry invites us to imagine the experiences of enslaved women subjected to gynecological experiments--the blood, pain, loss, shame, and survival. Linking past and present, Patient. brilliantly condemns the inhumanity of professionals who infringe black women's bodies and celebrates the humanity of those who resist them. It will disturb and move your spirit.--Dorothy Roberts, Author, Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty

Theme - recovery, the many aspects
By Grady Harp
California poet, writer and performance and visual artist Bettina Judd also is a researcher and teacher in Women's, Gender, and African American studies. Her powers of communication come from a rich intellect as well as a sensitivity to issues other ignore. This book of poems, her first solo anthology, is powerful as well as exquisitely written. Her subject - Recovery - be that in the memory of some famous `patients' or form assaults on the human form in other ways.

BORN STRANGE

The child in the caul
carries her eyes over
to the dead woman who pushed
her back into the womb

says, 'I'll remember you
when I'm big'

dead woman laughs
not surprised that
she's been seen,

`sho you
will'

FILL A WOMAN WITH MEANING

Look
uninhibited.
Children
the stroll
no lye relaxer.

Tell her
how to
rest her chin
wipe tears

when to
become woman
make love
never forget.

Explain to her
her sadness
fibroids,
miscarriage
blood sugar,
Wellbutrin.

Bend a spoon
find the torn,
the growing,
find what separates
apes from men.

Whatever you do,
do not pull curtains
to primitive
night.

Do not shatter the
mirror to reveal

artist,
lover,

Do not let her know
terror
belongs to you.

To appreciate this collection of emotion and creativity the entire book demands to be read and then re-read. This is powerful poetry by a very important artist. Grady Harp, March 15

Wonderful Study Bible
By Sarahjanel
I have had this bible since I was 16 years old, I am 33 now and I still use it. I buy this Bible for all new Christians that I know. Even though it says Student, it has a wonderful bible readingplan in the front. (Actually 3 plans, several two week courses, a 1 year and a three year bibl plan.) There are little boxes ou can check/highlight when you finish them. I also love how there are descriptions throughout as you read the Bible. Easy to understand and great for newer Christians. I do have a new "adult" bible that I love now, but I still like to use this one occasionally. I just bought 4 more to give out!

I felt funny at first when someone said
By Kat
I am writing this review for those out there who think this is a book for kids. When my mom passed away, this bible was what she would read (ok, there is sentiment involved). But she was given this book from a word of life study, and even though there were other bibles in her personal effects, this was on her nightstand. I have since found myself in several bible studies and use this bible. The little snippets that prelude chapters I stop and read. They paint a vivid picture that I find myself sharing with others. I felt funny at first when someone said,"Oh, my teenage daughter has that book. But now not so much. I am not a master of the bible, I am a student of his word. I know there are fancier bibles with red letters and gold trimmed pages, but this unassuming bible has made me want to read more and share. My mother got this book when she was in her seventies. She was a reader of the classics unlike me. But on this one I have to agree. I would recommend this book to students of all ages. If you have never read the bible in its entirety try this one. No age limit.

Classical Electromagnetism in a Nutshell, by Anupam Garg

This graduate-level physics textbook provides a comprehensive treatment of the basic principles and phenomena of classical electromagnetism. While many electromagnetism texts use the subject to teach mathematical methods of physics, here the emphasis is on the physical ideas themselves. Anupam Garg distinguishes between electromagnetism in vacuum and that in material media, stressing that the core physical questions are different for each. In vacuum, the focus is on the fundamental content of electromagnetic laws, symmetries, conservation laws, and the implications for phenomena such as radiation and light. In material media, the focus is on understanding the response of the media to imposed fields, the attendant constitutive relations, and the phenomena encountered in different types of media such as dielectrics, ferromagnets, and conductors. The text includes applications to many topical subjects, such as magnetic levitation, plasmas, laser beams, and synchrotrons.

Classical Electromagnetism in a Nutshell is ideal for a yearlong graduate course and features more than 300 problems, with solutions to many of the advanced ones. Key formulas are given in both SI and Gaussian units; the book includes a discussion of how to convert between them, making it accessible to adherents of both systems.

  • Offers a complete treatment of classical electromagnetism

  • Emphasizes physical ideas

  • Separates the treatment of electromagnetism in vacuum and material media

  • Presents key formulas in both SI and Gaussian units

  • Covers applications to other areas of physics

  • Includes more than 300 problems

Review
"This is a very comprehensive book on classical electromagnetism covering historical introductions, detailed theoretical derivations with additional mathematical clarifications whenever necessary, practical applications, and numerous exercises and examples for teachers and students in this subject. It can certainly be a useful text-book for students as well as a good reference book for professionals in various fields of electromagnetism."--Vladimir Cadez, Zentralblatt MATH

From the Back Cover

"This text provides a fresh, modern look at electrodynamics. It is comprehensive, chock full of interesting insights and anecdotes, and written with a clear enthusiasm."--Kenneth A. Intriligator, University of California, San Diego

"Garg displays considerable wisdom and courage in writing a long-overdue, modern treatment of electromagnetism. I wish I had this book when I was a student. It contains delightful morsels of deep insight (the introduction taught me that fields are as real as a rhinoceros, or as I might extend it, 'quantum fields are as real as quantum rhinos') and interesting topics that are rarely, if ever, treated in other texts."--A. Zee, author of Quantum Field Theory in a Nutshell

"Garg demonstrates that while the mathematical beauty of his subject is deserving of the attention it gets, the physical implications are even more seductive. This book is a treasure trove of thoughtful and incisive nuggets. I expect to see it on the shelves of many students and professors the world over."--R. Shankar, Yale University

"An outstanding text. It offers delightful insights into the physics of electromagnetism rather than treating this subject as an excuse for laborious exercises in mathematical methods. It has the best treatment of electromagnetism in material media that I know. Remarkably lucid and enjoyable, and a worthy competitor to Jackson's classic text."--Jainendra Jain, Pennsylvania State University

"Classical Electromagnetism in a Nutshell is an interesting and elegant book, and an excellent text for a graduate-level course on the subject. Garg has a lively, modern writing style that will engage today's graduate students."--John D. Stack, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

"Garg's textbook is truly excellent. It goes the extra mile to provide physical insight in ways that will enhance students' understanding, and includes rarely seen topics as well. I want to compliment the author on the obvious care and expertise with which he assembled this text. If I were to teach a yearlong graduate-level electromagnetism course, I would use this book."--John W. Belcher, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

A good book
By David Housley
The aproach to what can be a daunting subject is quite effective. The author is good at filling in the gaps where many texts in this area fail. It, however, has a few weaknesses like all books. It cannot compete with the readability and clarity of Griffith's undergraduate text and it lacks the depth of Jackson's book but is a good midpoint between these two references.

Wonderful E&M Book
By Martin F. Melhus
I am not aware of any nut on this earth whose shell could contain this volume. That, however, is my only negative criticism of the book. The material is presented as well as I've ever seen it, clearly, concisely, and logically, in both CGS and MKS units (often texts at this level pick one; here you not only get both, but gain fluency in conversion). This book has helped deepen my understanding of the material greatly. In terms of knowledge gained vs. effort expended to gain it, this is the best E&M book I've ever used, on a par with Landau's "Mechanics". I can't recommend this strongly enough, and if I ever teach a graduate E&M course, this will be the text.

Exemplary Electromagnetic Exegesis
By G. A. Schoenagel
Two excellent books recently appeared on the textbook horizon: This book (2012) and the text of Zangwill (2013).
I acquired both. I like them both. However, I like this textbook just a bit more. A few reasons for my preference:
(1). This text displays major equations in both Gaussian and SI Units.( Zangwill preference to SI; my preference
for CGS if only due that the Electric and Magnetic Fields are ultimately inseparable entities--see Preface, Schwartz,1972.).
(2). This text does not utilize an "i" in the metric of Special Relativity. (Zangwill retains the use of "i"; Being, as am I,
a student of Taylor and Wheeler's Spacetime Physics, I've never warmed up to the use of "i" when discussing Relativity,
on a deeper level consult Representations of the Rotation and Lorentz Groups by Gel'fand, Minlos and Shapiro).
So much for the cursory comparison. I've spent more time with this text than Zangwill's, therefore I turn to Garg's exposition.
Chapter One, a brief Survey, is followed by a thirty page review of the mathematical skills necessary for perusal of this textbook.
Section Eight--of Chapter Two--is a delightful, brief account of Stoke's and Gauss' Theorems. Exercises occur within sections,
an excellent pedagogic strategy. The Next Chapter, Electrostatics in Vacuum, has a nice problem of electrostatics in crystals
(Compare: Section 8.3 in Feynman,Volume Two) and a nice discussion (page 65) of Electric Field Divergence and Curl as a
substantiation of Coulomb's Law (previously discussed). Magnetostatics follows. Again, Magnetic Field Divergence and Curl plus
Symmetry considerations flesh out the discussion of static/steady currents, along with Divergence and Curl of Point Dipoles.
Page 93: "If accelerating charges produce radiation, how can the magnetic field be constant in time?" Discussion then ensues.
Page 128, The Table of Maxwell Equations, and this, "...it would be a delusion to think that we can ever do anything but guess the
Laws of Physics..." followed by a nice exercise (131) in Field decomposition into transverse and longitudinal parts.
Fifth Chapter, we read, "....only changes in Energy are meaningfully considered..." , a remark subsequently elaborated upon.
Symmetries and Conservation Laws, next : Poynting and Angular Momentum considerations plus some Relativity (Page 149).
Electromagnetic Waves, Polarization, Lasers, all are treated in exemplary fashion; we read: "...the oft-heard statement that the
Photon is a spin-one particle means no more and no less than that the EM Field must be represented in terms of a Potential
that is a tensor of rank one..."(Page 175). Coverage in the following Chapter extends to Interference phenomena, which gets one
to the exceptional Ninth Chapter wherein Green's Functions are introduced and utilized. Also, Section 57, Equation Ten (Page 212)
should be compared with the physical discussion as expounded upon in Feynman's Volume One, Chapter 28). Delightful !
These Chapters (Nine,Ten, Eleven) encapsulate Time-Dependence and make for a marvelous trilogy. Action Principles, next; this
material, while satisfying, can be expanded by perusal of Schwinger's Electrodynamics Text. One should also read Feynman's
Special Lecture Chapter 19, Principle of Least Action, in his Volume Two as a preliminary. All pieces then come together as one !
Four Chapters (13,14,15 & 16) give complete expositions of the difficult topic of the (Static) Fields in and around material bodies.
This exposition is as captivating as that which is found in Eyges' book (Classical Electromagnetic Field). Compare and contrast !
Other Chapters take us to time-dependence (18,19,20 &21). These eight chapters are quite challenging and require careful rumination.
The following (22) on Scattering, is fairly brief, but entertaining (especially Section 148, scattering by small particles).
Following which is Special Relativity( reiterating: no imaginary-time coordinate) and a beautiful section (158) on accelerated motion.
Electromagnetism coupled with Special Relativity is treated, next, in an excellent Chapter 24. (Compare page 570 to Misner, Thorne,
and Wheeler's pages 63-64 !) with the text ending on a discussion of radiation from relativistic sources (Compare with Schwinger).
Excellent exercises (some with hints and solutions), a bibliography for further reading and useful appendices (special functions) all
conspire to provide a rich source of inspiration. The author writes with clarity and profundity. Much else awaits the prospective student.
This is an excellent, advanced, textbook.

Get Smart About Art: A Practical Guide to Selling Art at Estate Sales & Downsizing Sales, by Barry Gordon, Sushee Perumal

MaxSold has managed thousands of online Estate Sale and Downsizing auctions across North America, and we are delighted to share what we have learned.

This book isn’t meant to be an authority on art, as even with decades of study and specialization art is a difficult subject to master. However, by reviewing the details in this book, you’ll have a solid foundation in what to look for when it comes to art found in a typical estate or downsizing sale.

First, you’ll get an appreciation of the critical physical attributes to consider when it comes to art. There’s a dead simple way to get an idea if the art piece is a print or painting – using a tool called loupe.

Second, you’ll learn physical attributes to consider such as what it is painted on, medium used and condition of the frame. Third, you will learn that dates, signatures, monograms and gallery marks are important, and get a listing of online tools to access to research the piece.

When describing and taking photos of art, you will learn what’s important to cover in the description, and aspects of the piece that will need to be photographed. Lastly, you will learn five critical mistakes people make when describing art.

Good Book: Easy to Read/View
By Diana Sheedy
This book was an easy read and very informative. There are so many nuances in art these days so it was helpful to see information with a lot of pictures. It would be great if you could go into a little more detail about serigraphs. I am sure I will be referring to this over and over again as I move forward in my current career.

Good Introduction To Astrology
By Jeff Marzano
I don't know much about astrology but to me this book seems to provide a good introduction to the basic concepts.

The Edgar Cayce material provides some unique contributions to astrology with Cayce's idea of the planetary sojourns which people experience between incarnations. For Cayce astrology and reincarnation are closely related.

Nelson was able to compare Cayce's astrological influences with his real past life experiences. I suspect it is very rare that those two sources of information are both available for someone in that level of detail.

Cayce said astrologers should be using the sidereal Zodiac but most use the tropical Zodiac. The book uses the tropical Zodiac which I felt wasn't that great if he is trying to explain Cayce's interpretation of astrology.

Nelson agrees with Edgar Cayce that some people may not be affected by the effects of astrological influences on their lives. They can override those influences with their own free will and the choices they make. So this makes me wonder how useful astrology really is for individuals.

I'm interested in astrology more in relation to mythology, ancient monuments like the pyramids, and world affairs. The book gets into some of that where it says Edgar Cayce became the Egyptian's sun god Ra because he had been on the Sun before being reincarnated as the Atlantean priest Ra Ta.

Ancient cultures believed that the constellations of the Zodiac are living entities.

They also believed that the stars in the constellations influenced how the Earth was formed all of those unimaginable eons ago.

Astrology is supported in the bible. Ezekiel's vision of the four living creatures corresponds to the four fixed signs of the Zodiac. Those strange Zodiac creatures appear again in the Book Of Revelation and they are the ones who told John about the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Nelson says some things which seem a little far out to me. He says based on astrology the FBI should have waited another month before trying to end the siege of the Branch Davidians at Waco, Texas.

He says the Star Of Bethlehem was a super nova.

Overall this is a pretty good book if you want to understand Cayce's views about astrology.

Edgar Cayce's Secrets of Astrology.
By gloria
It was too light weight in content and was really all about Cayce's philosophy on reincarnation rather than information about astrology. Basically it was a disappointment.

Review

This is the ultimate 'how-to' book for anyone who wants to use reasons and evidence in support of conclusions, to be clear instead of confusing, persuasive instead of dogmatic, and better at evaluating the arguments of others. No one outgrows its forty-five timeless rules, all explained and illustrated with vivid examples. The fourth edition, even more elegantly organized and concise than before, adds new material on oral presentations and Web sources that everyone needs. --Debra Nails, Michigan State University

I'm very pleased with the new edition of this book. I've been using A Rulebook for Arguments for several years now in my critical thinking course with great success . . . the chapters on generalizations (formerly arguments by examples), sources (arguments by authority), and arguments about causes have all improved substantially. Thanks for a great new edition! --David Morrow, Hunter College

An elegant, concise, and consistently useful little book that every student needs. --Rachel Hadas, Rutgers University

A Rulebook for Beginners
By The Old Wise Man
"A Rulebook for Beginners" is made up of 45 discrete rules which have been categorised into nine chapters of general arguing techniques.
Not only does the author give positive rules for arguing, but he also lists about two dozen "Common Fallacies" in a glossary format at the end of the book.

The rulebook is written in an easy to read, and easy to reference layout. While you would definitely read it from front to back the first time, it has been specifically designed so that an engaged beginner can easily refer back to this rulebook when constructing arguments.
While it is clearly focused at the beginner, an intermediate `debater' will certainly glean some helpful hints from it.

Because it is only a concise rulebook, it doesn't do into detailed arguing techniques at all. So if you are interested in more advanced arguing methods, then you should definitely look elsewhere.

Overall this is a superb text for what it was designer for; A Rulebook for Beginners.

Great Primer and Reference Guide
By Pragmatic Reviewer
I bought this because I wanted a concise quick reference book for argumentation. My job deals primarily with Administrative Law and I write to aribitrators and judges on a daily basis. This book has been exceptional in helping to develop my Agency's position before a third party. The key to any good position paper or case narrative is brevity in framing the argument. This book is a daily reference for logically setting up my arguments in easy to digest sentences.

The book is written in short chapters that give examples of properly framing an argument or position. Although written primarily for an academic setting (term papers, dissertations, etc.) it has tremendous cross occupational applications. The book is written to the layman and clearly defines academic terminology commonly used in academia. It is short enough to be read in a couple of hours and arranged in a easy to follow format with each chapter building upon the previous. The chapter on fallacious arguments is superb in that it allows the user to avoid common pitfalls that could potentially overturn the most well reasoned arugument.

Ironically, the only downside to the book comes from what makes it so great, it's conciseness. A book of this type cannot possibly be expected to contain every detail and minutia of argumentation. There have been times, when I've been left needing more. But for everyday reference this is the best book on the subject I've found yet. It's small enough to not take up too much space in my small office, yet good enough to help me in developing my argument.

A veritable entry-level book for those seeking information on how to employ critical thinking
By ZyPhReX
A Rulebook For Arguments by Anthony Weston is a veritable entry-level book for those seeking information on how to employ critical thinking.

The book is quite short, but the value of the information this book provides more than makes up for the size considering the quality of information.

For those seeking a practical rulebook on the applications of logic, argumentation, fallacies and more, this book gives an easy to follow but robust approach.

Given the breath of the information, page for page, this book is a high-value item, especially considering it also offers a synopsis on some of the more common fallacies employed by people.

Some additional of the elements discussed in the book are generalizations, sources, deductive arguments, oral arguments, argumentative essays, arguments by analogy, and more.

The other benefit is that this book can be read by people of all ages, and it will aid them immensely. From adults, to young children, this book would fine-tune anyone’s repertoire.

To finalize, as a book to keep in hand to quickly reference this book will be crucial given the latitude that it offers individuals willing to apply its rules.

Kindest Regards,

The International Century
By A Customer
This is the international century, so it is most appropriate that authors from 5 countries came together under the expert partnership of Kruger & Riordan who have coedited an international anthology of worker sport (of which there is a chapter here in the book) before. The book is a perfect overview which would serve a university course well. All chapters (one exception on Afro-American sport) were written exclusively for the book, and some in fields not before explored: Kruger's history of homosexuality and sport is timely and superb: If the rate of homosexuality is 10 p.c. in sport, do the two football players on the field who are gay enjoy the tossing and tumbling differently than their straight co-players? His comparison of fascism and sport in Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany and Franco's Spain shows that a lot was actually invented in Italy and later on refined by Germany. Wedemeyer puts terrorism and sport (Ireland, Palestinians etc.) into an historical context. Bill Murray (author of 2 world histories of soccer)is the best expert on the history of the international soccer organizations. Gudrun Doll-Tepper, president of the disabled organisations, gives a structural analysis of her sport.etc, etc. You name a world expert and you will find it in the book.

This fast-paced guide enables developers to design and build Enterprise applications for the cloud. You will find it easy to follow this book, as the authors use an actual online portal application for the case study. Throughout the development of the sample application there is discussion of important considerations for moving an application into the cloud. If you provide technological leadership to your enterprise - senior developers, architects, CIO/CTO - and you want or need to guide your enterprise's application design to Azure, this is the perfect book for you! Since the examples are in .NET, the book will skew to MS-oriented developers. But a lot of what is discussed will be applicable to anyone wanting to work with Azure. No matter what language you use, you provision the application fabric the same way, and all the underlying concepts will be the same. You will need experience with Visual Studio, and some basic SQL Server knowledge.

Review
Microsoft Azure Enterprise Application Development is a well-written book, that can cover many features of Windows Azure offering and can be evaluated by both managers and developers/IT pros as a reference book. --blogs.msdn.com/b/nikosan/archive/2011/04/20/review-for-microsoft-azure-enterprise-application-development-packt-publishing.aspx :- Nikos Anastopoulos

From the Author
Nate and I have developed and nurtured several enterprise applications, some of which we're sure would be even better on Azure. The problem was convincing our bosses. How would we explain Azure? What features make Azure better than a traditional on-premises application? What kind of extra work would be involved with Azure development? Are there downsides to Azure? Our discussions of how to answer these questions led to this book.

This is not a dedep-dive technical manual for a development team, although we do develop a sample application as we examine the features of Azure. This book is meant more for architects, senior developers, and others involved in the decision making process who want some more information on Azure--basically, the folks who provide "technological leadership" to their enterprise.

In writing this book, we hope we helpyour enterprise gain a deeper understanding of Azure, and put you in a position to make the best decision for your applications. Best wishes for your continued success!

Nice introductory book for Windows Azure
By nikos anastopoulos
I had the privilege to read and make a small review of the "Microsoft Azure: Enterprise Application Development", from Richard J. Dudley, Nathan A. Duchene published by PACKT Publishing (ISBN 978-1-849680-98-1) on December 2010.

I spent enough time reading the book, and I strongly believe it's a very nice book, for the following reasons:

- It has a very nice structure, that helps readers become familiar with both Cloud and Microsoft's Cloud Platform offering (Windows Azure), even if they had never heard about this term. I really liked the statement "No cloud computing platform can be all things to all people", since there is a lot of noise and different interpretation of Cloud, either by vendors or by nature (public vs. private) [Chapter 1: Introduction to Cloud Computing]
- "Explaining Azure to the managers" was a nice surprise, since they demystify all new aspects of Azure [Chapter 2: The Nickel Tour of Azure]
- The authors provide detailed information on how to setup the development environment and create Windows Azure account, which is very helpful, especially for beginners [Chapter 3: Setting Up for Development]
- They also provide enough resources for third party tools and Microsoft programs, either CTPs or on codeplex.com, that can be useful to all
- In SQL Azure, I liked the feature comparison between this version and SQL Server 2008 (on premise). If you consider migrating your database on Azure, then you'll find this information useful, since besides feature comparison they briefly cover other important areas like Security, Manageability, Scalability and High Availability, Data Synchronization and Data Migration. [Chapter 5: Introduction to SQL Azure]
Microsoft offers several storage options, BLOBs, Tables and Queues, besides the relational SQL Azure database, and there are useful information in each option. It's interesting to note how to create a new BLOB storage, how to use the REST API for BLOB storage [Chapter 6: Azure Blob Storage].
- "Table Storage versus database tables" is another interesting section in Table storage since it highlights some key conceptual differences using simple examples, limitations of this storage type, exception handling and use of REST API [Chapter 7: Azure Table Storage].
- Although I'm not sure how familiar you might be with Queues (it's a very interesting pattern for asynchronous communication between applications or systems), but in case you are not, you will find interesting the "Reasons to use a queue" section [Chapter 8: Queue Storage]
- Similarities of ASP.NET and Web role in Azure and "Application diagnostics and logging in the cloud" are some interesting parts on [Chapter 9: Web Role], especially the association of log files and storage options. The sample application is fine, but I would prefer if C# had been used instead of VB.NET.
- If you are not familiar with WCF and endpoints, you will find helpful the notes in sample code and configuration files, as well as the brief introductions in contracts (Service, Operation and Data) [Chapter 10: Web Services and Azure]
Worker role is an interesting offering and there are some useful information in [Chapter 11: Worker Roles] like "Uses of worker roles", "Thread pools", "Management", the use of non-IIS servers ("Externally facing worker roles", although there are not enough details on how to achieve that), and recommendations for best practices.
- The most interesting feature of Windows Azure is AppFabric, and the book covers the main uses of it: Access Control and Service Bus. The `claims based authentication' and use of Tokens are explained in a well-understood way and the sample configuration is very useful for your first attempt to use this service. Regarding Service Bus, the focus is on using this service for message relay (`to connect our systems with Service Bus, and use the Service Bus as our public endpoint') and as a connection broker (`The service bus then facilitates the two connections, finding a common protocol on which to communicate, and the two applications then use a direct connection'). [Chapter 13: Azure AppFabric]
- Since monitoring and diagnostics are important components of a successful implementation and deployment, the information and resources provided in [Chapter 14: Azure Monitoring and Diagnostics] are very helpful.
- Finally, the entire deployment process is nicely described, especially the various environments (Staging, Production), with detailed information (screen-shots) that help a lot [Chapter 15: Deploying to Windows Azure].

Overall it is a well-written book, that can cover many features of Windows Azure offering and can be evaluated by both managers and developers/IT pros as a reference book. In order to gain more insight on the development parts, you will have to create a Windows Azure account, deploy the sample application, and extend it based on your own needs/requirements.

Taking into consideration all of the above, I highly recommend it as a must-have book for Windows Azure introduction (level 200) book

Nice concise overview of Microsoft Azure
By T Anderson
The book is a nice concise overview of Microsoft Azure. I have not had any clients express interested in the cloud yet. They are not willing to hear about giving up the control over their environments which is a stigma the cloud conversation carries with it. I still wanted to know what is going on with Azure, without having to spend 2 months mulling through a tome. This book was the perfect size and depth for getting me up to speed quickly.

The book is intended to give you enough information to decide whether or not further movement toward the cloud is something you want to do, and it does that perfectly.

The book starts off with an overview of cloud computing, an introduction to Azure, and covers setting up a development environment. After that the rest of the book designs and builds a sample application which is used to introduce the key components of Microsoft Azure.

The book has a chapter on each of the following topics- Azure Blob Storage, Azure Table Storage, Queue Storage, Web Role, Web Services and Azure, Worker Roles, Local Application for Updates, Azure AppFabric, Azure Monitoring and Diagnostics, and Deploying to Windows Azure.

Most chapters introduces the topic and then show a working example. The others that just describe the topic describe it in enough detail that you have a good understanding of the topic and they provide good references if you want to dig deeper.

The book did a really good job covering the different types of services and different types of storage available. It also did a great job of describing the differences in SQL Server and SQL Azure.

All in all I thought this book did exactly what it set out to do. It provided me with enough information that I now feel like I know what Microsoft Azure is all about.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants an introduction the Microsoft Azure platform.

Misleading title
By A. Ullal
The book is a good (but outdated) introduction to Azure development and does a good job of explaining the various components of Azure and their relationships. However, I was disappointed with the title of the book and it's contents. From the title, I was expecting the book to tack topics such as:

- Change Management
- Monitoring
- Release Management
- Integration
- Identity Management

and other topics relevant to enterprise development. These topics were either glossed over or not covered in this book.
