While generally positive to the economic potential of increased labor migration, these allies remained highly skeptical towards calls from employers and bourgeois parties for liberalization.

Bucken-Knapp argues that the SAP and LO develop their labor migration policy preferences on the basis of whether specific reform alternatives are perceived as being consistent with, or as undermining, the Swedish model. In the case of third-country nationals, both allies considered liberalization a threat to full employment aims, instead seeking to preserve an influential role for the state labor market board and organized labor. Bucken-Knapp also focuses on the Swedish labor migration debate prior to the 2004 enlargement of the European Union, showing how SAP concerns over potential abuse of the universal welfare state led to its support for transitional arrangements. Defending the Swedish Model illuminates the challenges faced by social democrats and trade unions when considering the need for increased labor migration.

An excellent analysis of how migration policy reform is hammered out - and valid beyond Sweden

Bucken-Knapp writes clearly, concisely and occasionally eloquently about the lengthy and complex gestation of a major policy reform in Sweden. His interest is in party-trade union relations, but he takes migration policy as the test case, making what could have been a stolid PhD thesis into a widely applicable tale of contention over a new migration policy. He has done wide research and interviewed almost all the main players, and his book spins the reform process into a tale which will excite wonks, especially migration policy wonks. He even invents a six-component "model" for labour migration policy (gatekeepers, criteria for entry, location of job search, labour market access, permit upgrade and welfare rights). This model is could be applied to any labour migration policy, anywhere. If at times he is a bit repetitive, or overly reliant on Wuokko Knocke's 2002 book, there is little missing in this book except, perhaps, an international perspective. But a well-informed reader will quickly make the links.

A Jewel From Soggy Seattle

Ann Pelo has done a wonderful job capturing her year of caring for a young child, walking through puddles and parks in Seattle and observing nature and human nature. Her book is a great dose of the cure for "Nature Deficit Disorder." Ann's attention to detail reminds me of Vivian Paley's many books honoring the serious conversations and issues we all face, but through the eyes of kindergarteners she taught in the Chicago Lab School. Pelo's Goodness of Rain captures the insight of young eyes opening to the world and respectfully adds her insight and wisdom into ways we may still appreciate the natural world-even in our over-domesticated, city-dwelling lives. This book is a jewel that should stand alongside Annie Dillard, Robert Michael Pyle, Tony Angell, Gary Snyder and other natural history writers comfortable in the Northwest's damp and evergreen landscape.

Just bad writing. If you want to understand what the Dao De Jing meant to the Chinese when it was written, read Hendrick's 1992 "Lao Tzu: Te-Tao Ching - A New Translation Based on the Recently Discovered Ma-wang-tui Texts"

I nicely made edition of a classic.

I'm not going to comment here about the quality of the actual content of the Tao Te Ching. With hundreds of publications, you can find longer and better written analyses of Lao Tzu's writings elsewhere. What I will say, however, is that I do find this particular translation very well done. Some passages are a bit challenging to understand at first glance, but I prefer a translation that stays as true to the original as possible over ones that make changes and assumptions to aid the reader.

The actual construction of the book is absolutely fantastic. The passages are spread out with calligraphy of an important word or phrase from said passage on the opposing page face. It's minimal but beautiful, and I believe the art adds to the reading experiences. The paper stock is more thicker and more sturdy than standard novel paper, and the cover sleeve is matte (as apposed to the awful glossy covers that attract fingerprints and smudges).

Beautiful book

As someone who is new to Eastern philosophy, this book is an accessible, and poetic take on the TTC. I've compared to other editions and the translations vary tremendously not just in style but in use of metaphor, word choice, and cadence. With an ancient text written in a non-wetern tongue, it's difficult for a neophyte to know if you're getting the straight dope.

That being said, it's a beautiful work, and I've found tremendous insight and meaning in it. I would guess that the translation is geared toward contemporary westerners, as opposed academics, and like any work of philosophy or religious thought, it's important to take it with a grain of salt, and consider that it was written for an ancient world. That aside, it's still an essential read that touches on countless human truths. The deceptively simple passages of the TTC can have a profound influence on the way one looks at one's world.

Personally, I feel slightly more at peace, more understanding of the ebbs and flows of life, and from that stronger and more clear-headed, every time I read from this book. One thing the eastern traditions of Taoism and Buddhism seem to stress is seeing the truth for what it is, not believing in signs and symbols, or what you think you know or what you have been telling yourself, and this book illuminates that notion. In a media-saturated society oozing deceptive advertising and political punditry, it's great meditate on reality once in a while.

Branding pays off!

There are so many powerful branding messages Steve McKee offers in his book. I particularly enjoyed the messages on relationships needing to be reciprocal and customers not always being right. Those two branding concepts need to be front and center for any business owner. I highly recommend this book to anyone who values the importance of branding their business, and maintaining outstanding working relationships with colleagues and customers.

I used to think you start a business with a business plan and branding is a luxury, this book changed everything. Since I read it I realized the clockwork behind the world of branding. My perception has changed and now I know branding is step 1 and if branding is step 1 then this book should be the first you read .

About the Author
Jeremy Walenn has had a varied career. He graduated in Law at Leeds University, but then qualified as a primary teacher and taught in infant/junior schools for five years. He changed to teaching English as a Foreign Language and worked in large language schools in London and Oxford before becoming the Head of the Language Centre at Cranfield University in Oxfordshire, where he worked on several English for Peacekeeping projects. He moved to Hong Kong in 2003 to take up an appointment as English Language Director at the Asia International Open University (Macau). He teaches the English language modules on the university's MBA and DBA courses. He also recently developed a course for gaming staff at one of the casinos in Macau. He is an examiner in English language and has travelled extensively in south-east Asia, Europe and South America. He has been an author of English language materials for over 20 years. Jeremy has written the following Garnet Education titles: ESAP: English for Law and Talking Trinity and still enjoys the thrill of starting to write a new book. Terry Phillips has worked in ELT for more than 35 years as a teacher, teaching supervisor, manager and language school owner. As a consultant, he has worked in more than 20 countries in all parts of the world, advising state and private language institutions on all aspects of school management. For the last ten years, he has been a full time freelance writer with his wife Anna, producing more than 160 published books in ELT. Riddled with suspense, and a captivating cast of characters - a 'flawless' sequel

Alison "Ali" DiLaurentis had the four B's of popularity: beauty, brains, body, and boys. She also had four amazing best friends - Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, Hanna Marin, and Emily Fields. As if their friendship weren't enough, she also knew secrets about all of them. Secrets that no one else even suspected, from bulimia to unfaithful parents, and everywhere in between. Then, one day, just as the summer was beginning, Ali disappeared, leaving four friends weeping in her wake. While their sorrow was strong, Ali's sudden disappearance was also a bit of a relief. After all, now their secrets would never be revealed. But the fact that Ali's body had never been uncovered always left a slight hesitation in their mind. That is, until she was found under a pile of cement, proving that their secrets would stay dead and buried. But maybe they spoke too soon. After four long years, Hanna, Aria, Spencer, and Emily are brought back together to mourn at the funeral of their long lost best friend. But things hit a sour note when the mysterious "A" contacts all of them once more, threatening to reveal their secrets and pin the blame on them for "The Jenna Thing." As if the eerie note isn't horrifying enough, each girl is shocked to see that the police have re-opened Alison's case. Only this time it's being treated as a murder, leaving the four former friends open for police questioning at any time. To make matters worse, Toby Cavanaugh - Jenna's reform school brother - has returned to the quiet town of Rosewood, attending nearby Tate Academy. And, while the former geek turned hottie seems harmless enough this time around, there's a mischievous glimmer in his eye that's leaving everyone on edge. It doesn't help that, since Toby's sudden arrival, "A" has been sending more and more notes. Making threats, demanding them to perform certain acts, and even spying on their every move. While the girls know that they should confide in one another regarding "A's" sudden attacks, they can't bring themselves to reveal such intimate, and oft-times embarrassing, details to one another. It doesn't help that a sense of mistrust has grown between all of them over the years, pushing them more into the acquaintance category, as opposed to the friend category; or that they're all facing certain dramas in their lives right now. Dramas that could tear them apart, and ruin their lives in a heartbeat. From the arrival of a deadbeat dad, to the rekindling of a forbidden romance, and even moving into trusting a former enemy territory. Spencer, Hanna, Emily, and Aria think that they'll be able to handle the newest drama on their own. But, as "A" moves closer in their direction, they begin to realize that if they're not careful, they may just be buried alive by their many scandalous secrets.

While Sara Shepard's debut, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, gave readers a character sketch, a surface look, if you will, at Hanna, Spencer, Emily, Aria, and even the missing Ali; FLAWLESS brings us back to where the first installment left off, the day of Ali's funeral, and instantly moves in to dissecting each of the aforementioned characters, giving readers the chance to get to know them better. Shepard has a talent for making the reader sympathize with, yet, at the same time, dislike certain people introduced. Her ability to make secondary characters memorable is amazing, and truly makes for a delightful read. While I find Aria and Hanna to be the most enchanting characters, simply because I can relate to both of them in various ways, I must admit that both Emily and Spencer are captivating in their own ways. The vulnerability that Hanna shows as she comes to terms with, and attempts to defeat bulimia, while giving into the pressures of anorexia nervosa, are addicting; while Spencer's inability to resist her older sister, Melissa's, boyfriends is jaw-dropping. Emily, like Hanna, is attempting to come to terms with the "real" her, which many readers will relate to quite well; while Aria is wacky and wonderful, and just working to keep her family together. Combined, each girls story presents a wonderful topping to the underlying truth: Ali's mysterious disappearance. With "A" moving in closer on every page, it's obvious that Shepard is working on revealing his or her identity sometime soon - or so we can hope. Riddled with suspense, and a captivating cast of characters - a 'flawless' sequel.

I enjoyed this book because it pulled you in and you always wanted to read, I disliked it because at some points the author tracked into a different time and it got confusing, but overall it was a great book and I can't wait to read the 3 book.

About the Author

R. Mark Musell teaches graduate courses in public budgeting and finance at the City College of New York, where he is also Director of Experiential Education for the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service. He has taught government budgeting at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University and the Metropolitan College of New York. Professor Musell is the author of studies on government management, public employee compensation, government performance, and federal budgeting. It's a good companion book

This was a nice companion book to others I read for a budget class I took a few semesters ago. It was well written, and had some valuable information, but is only strong on its own if you're reading this out of self-interest, and not a class requirement.

This was a book need for a degree program. The book arrived as stated when ordered, like they all have. This is only one of many books I have bought threw Amazon.com for my degree and I will continue to buy them here until I complete my degree.

Great textbook

I enjoy reading this book. It is very accessible and breaks down the budgeting process well. I would recommend it even for experienced nonprofit budgeting folks looking to learn more about public sector budgeting.

About the Author

Colin Robson�is Emeritus Professor of the School of Human and Health Sciences, Huddersfield University.� From 1996–2007 he was chief consultant to the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation project on the development of statistics and indicators on the performance of national systems for the education of children with disabilities, learning and behaviour difficulties, and social disadvantages.� He has recently completed a consultancy to a follow-up project funded by Eurostat. He is the author of the best-selling Real World Research.
