In early 1944 the first penetration of this prewar enemy territory was accomplished with the assault and occupation of Kwajalein and Majuro Atolls in the Marshall Islands. These were quickly followed by the seizure of Eniwetok Atoll. The major role in these over-all operations was undertaken by Marine units working in close coordination with elements of the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard. That they acquitted themselves with distinction is reflected in the rapidity with which they accomplished their missions. Operations in the Marshall Islands clearly indicated that Japanese bases in the Central Pacific could be by-passed. In this authoritative biography, Shearer (Patricia Neal: An Unquiet Life) surveys the career of actress Hedy Lamarr (1913-2000), born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna. In her teens, she was cast in German films, and in 1933, after she appeared nude in Ecstasy, she was catapulted to international fame. During an Atlantic crossing on the Normandie, Louis B. Mayer offered her an MGM contract and changed her name to Hedy Lamarr. Promoted as "the most beautiful girl in the world," she appeared in more than two dozen films between 1938 and 1958. Metro denied her a loan out to do the lead in Casablanca, but her vibrant screen presence in Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah (1949) left a lasting impression on both filmgoers and Paramount; it raked in over million to become the most profitable Paramount production up until that time. She faded from films in the 1950s, made numerous 1960s TV appearances and then dropped from the limelight, retiring to Florida in 1987. ALL YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW. . .AND MORE. . .

about the life of Hedy Lamarr. . .For all her fans, and there are still many of us. . .(just look up her name on the internet), this is the book we have been waiting for. When we were kids, and teenagers, and even grown men (and envious women!), how we would patiently wait for her to appear. Who could ever forget her dramatic entrance in WHITE CARGO, purring, "I am Tondelayo!" . . .and her emphatic declaration in SAMSON AND DELILAH, "No man leaves Delilah. . ." as though anyone would want to!!!! or her dramatic entrance in ZIEGFIELD GIRL. No one doubted for a moment who Tony Martin was crooning to when he sang, "You Stepped out of a Dream." No one really cared whether she could act or not. . .I think she could! and no one really cared what the plot of the movie was. . .if Hedy was starring, we went in droves... and we were not disappointed.

Stephen Michael Shearer relates all the familiar details of Miss Lamarr's life, but also reveals tidbits of a more personal nature after she left Hollywood and retired, first to New York and then to Florida. One cannot help but feel sad to witness her later years. . . as she tumbled from the heights of stardom to being so unknown that even her neighbors did not know her real identity. Yes,indeed, she was surely right, "Once one has tasted stardom, everything else is poverty!" Fortunately, she had friends who loved her anyway for the real person she was, despite her faults and failings. . .

If you are a Hedy Fan, read this book and you will not be disappointed, and if you are not, you will become one! You will immmediately run out, find all her movies available on DVD, view them once again, and be forever convinced that indeed, she really was "the fairest of them all," during the Golden Years of Hollywood of course. . .but indeed, she is still able to turn men's heads today, and make women wonder. . .

Hedy Lamarr

A fascinating book, extremely well written in detailed relative to historical events of 30's and 40's when Hedy was growing up. Hedy Lamar, in addition to her acting, she never got the recognition that she deserved as far as what she did scientifically for SPREAD SPECTRUM technology which now communication technology is based on. I just could not put this book down. Great job.

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL

.....Whose the fairest of them all? In Disney's Classic it was Snow White. If the question had been asked in Hollywood in the Forties, it would have been Hedy Lamarr.

.....When Snow White became the fairest in the land her life became one of turmoil and strife but in the end she was rescued by Prince Charming and lived happily ever after. Unfortuneately there was no Prince Charming to rescue Hedy as she careened recklessly through six husbands after very brief courtships. She seemed to take more care in selecting her wardrobe than she did in choosing a mate. Consequently her marriages were brief affairs, the longest being to oil millionare Howard Lee, 1953 - 1960, who finally got tired of Hedy using him as an ATM machine and was the only one of her husbands to initiate the divorce. He then married Gene Tierney who inherited his estate and lived out the remainder of her life as a socialite in Houston. That was the second time Hedy crossed paths with Tierney, the first being when she turned down Otto Preminger's offer to play Laura in the movie that became a film noir classic. Tierney took the role and it became her signature movie. It was poor judgement like this, combined with gross mismangement by MGM and Louie Mayer that cost Hedy several key roles, (For Whom the Bell Tolls, Casablanca, Gaslight, Saratoga Trunk etc.) all taken by Ingrid Bergman and any one of which would have establishd Lamarr as a serious actress. It wasn't until she got the part in Sampson and Delilah at the age of 36 that she was given the type of role that she was born for but at that stage in her career it was too late.

.....How did this beautiful woman who was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and was handed the world on a silver platter end up at one time living on Social Security disability checks and a small SAG pension? This book chronicles the journey.

.....One wonders what might have become of Hedy if she had signed with Paramount early in her career instead of opting to tie her self to MGM and Louie Mayer? Mayer had no idea what to do with Hedy. Mayer prided himself on turning out wholesome family movies, his favorites were the Andy Hardy series and MGM's forte was lavish musicals. Hedy didn't sing or dance and definetly was not family movie material.

.....Between 1938 and 1949 Hedy made three movies that were significant in her career. None of them were made by MGM. She made Algiers in 1938 for United Artists and became an International Star overnight, Experiment Perilous in 1944 for RKO in which the critics praised her acting ability and Sampson and Delilah in 1949 for Paramount. In between these highlights were eight years of very forgetable movies turned out by MGM. One of these clunkers was "White Cargo" and almost ended Hedy's career. In this movie she uttered the immortal line, " I am Tondelayo, I stay". This phrase became an industry joke for bad acting and the actress became Hedy Lamarr. When the Hedy/Anthiel patent for a torpedo guideance system made the news, Mayer instructed his PR people to squelch it, He was selling a glamor girl and he didn't want Hedy's fans to see her as an Egg Head. But it is not fair to blame all Hedy's woes on Mayer, Hedy was always headstrong and not easy to work with. In many way she was her own worst enemy, a modern day Sybll with a many faceted personality. She was promiscuous and very generous with her favors but seemed to go out of her way to antagonize friends. She began to equate money with security but spent it as if it was burning a hole in her purse. She knew from an early age her power over men and how to manipulate her beauty. It almost destroyed her.

.....To quote from the book her former costar John Fraser said it best, "She had been fawned upon, indulged and exploited ever since she had reached the age of puberty. Her extrodinary intelligence did not encompass wisdom. How could she have learnt about the values that matter, about kindness and acceptance and laughter, in the Dream Factory that is Hollywood? She had been thrust into the limelight at a pitilessy early age, been devoured by rapacious lovers and producers who saw her ravishing beauty as a ticket to success and who looked elsewhere when she began to grow older. Beauty and money in moderation are undoubtedly a blessing. In excess, they surley are a curse" She was a real life Norma Desmond but without the money.

.....To be fair to Hedy, she never got into drugs or alchohol or used the casting couch to get parts. She doted on her children and they loved and stood by her to the end. I am glad that she got recognition for her invention of spread spectrum before she died. Her invention was as significant as was Edison's light bulb in its impact on the World.

.....I finished the book with some sadness. She had so much potential. So much that could have been that never was. I hope she found peace in her beloved Vienna Woods.

If you have ever owned a pet and taken it to the veterinarian you have to read this book. The behind the scenes highs and lows of veterinary work are truely amazing. I worked in this field for 25 years and can vouch for Dr. Laura's stories. Some days you laugh yourself silly & other days you could cry yourself to sleep. It is a grueling yet ridiculously gratifying career. Great job Laura. This is a must read for all animal lovers.

This book is so engaging, that I could not put it down! I love the grit of its true to life details and the balance of frustration and sorrow to revelation and laughter. The author carries us skillfully down the path of her journey. I could feel the "wake up call" of her epiphany about the preciousness of life following her mother's freak accident. I could "walk in her shoes" as she built her strength, character and ability, getting into Vet school and dealing with the challenges heartbreak and exhaustion of Emergency Vet practice. I could see through her eyes a new perspective, when she shared the revelations of her extensive foreign travel, by bicycle, bring me "nose to nose" with third world realities, that shocked me out of my shell of American privilege. Bravo Dr. Lefkowitz!

Excellent introduction.. I would like the rest of the book!! This introduction has some excellent arguments on irreducible complexity, explaining that the science during Darwin's day contained a lot of hypothesis and did not take into account DNA or other modern scientific developments and understanding. Those modern developments call into question suppositions in the theory. This information should be presented in every classroom, for young, inquiring minds to look at so that they have the modern scientific evidence of today rather than just a theory and hypothesis. As the summary for A states: "Without a preening gland, birds cannot function with feathers. Without a unique muscular apparatus, special breathing and hollow bones, flight would not be possible. There is no evidence in the fossil record to show developing stages from reptiles to birds. We would expect to see a number of intermediary forms, but all we do see is complete creatures." Worth reading and pondering, this book is on my Top Shelf, and I will be looking for the rest of the publication as soon as it becomes available. I HIGHLY recommend this for its down to earth, easily understood explanations and clear reasoning - it is a title worth your while to read, absorb, understand and ponder.

Tricked My Reluctant Reader

My son was so enthralled with the pictures and the fascinating stories he tore through more reading material in an afternoon than he has read in a year. It might not be classic literature but its well written and the content is quite educational. It also gives kids an appreciation of the diversity that is in the world. I would recommend this book to any parent who wants to encourage their kids to read. 10 to 15 year old

About the Author
The author takes the "visual" in visualization very seriously. Colin Ware has advanced degrees in both computer science (MMath, Waterloo) and the psychology of perception (Ph.D., Toronto). He has published over a hundred articles in scientific and technical journals and at leading conferences, many of which relate to the use of color, texture, motion, and 3D in information visualization. In addition to his research, Professor Ware also builds useful visualization software systems. He has been involved in developing 3D interactive visualization systems for ocean mapping for over twelve years, and he directed the development of the NestedVision3D system for visualizing very large networks of information. Both of these projects led to commercial spin-offs. Professor. Ware recently moved from the University of New Brunswick in Canada to direct the Data Visualization Research Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire.

richly informative, concise

interaction designers, visual designers, researchers, people working in visualization, and the curious will find value in this book. careful readers will gain a deep understanding of how, why, and what we see. this understanding will inform the use of color, edges, contours, textures, layout, text, images, order and motion. designers will gain a new vista for critique and empathy: "which visual queries does this design imply? how well does it support those queries? how costly are they?" (a "visual query"--there's a more elegant definition in the book--is a question that is asked and answered with the eyes. for example, "which of these two items is larger?")

readers may come to appreciate just how mental, rather than mechanical, the act of vision is. they may also come to appreciate the preponderance of information that resides in the world, rather than the brain; and, on the other hand, the preponderance of information that the brain adds, via processing, to the incoming signal. vision and cognition interpenetrate to form a beautiful "strange loop" wherein what we seek influences what we see, and vice versa.

if i were asked to compose a canon of interaction design, this book would be in it, alongside About Face 3, Sketching User Experiences, and Envisioning Information.

one criticism: in my personal opinion, some of the designs and diagrams in the book are less than beautiful. this engenders a mild disconnect between the purpose and execution of the book.

Don't miss it

As a former biologist, venturing into software about 30 years ago, I found reading this book an enlighting experience. This is a must-read for anyone who never clearly knew why some visual designs are better than others but suspected there had to be a physiological reason. It is becoming a reference for my team of developers in the domain of numerical controls for industrial machine tools.

Exicting, Original, Superb Overall, Could be Expanded

I found this book provocative at multiple levels.

At the strategic level, although I have known about and followed Elsevier for decades, I am beginning to perceive a more coherent publishing strategy, and was pleased to see notice of their collaboration with BookAid and the Sabre Foundation to create libraries in developing countries.

At the operational level, I found this book to be a fascinating easy to read and understand integration of cognitive science (what is the brain doing to "see" different forms of visual cues (colors, shapes, groups, etcetera), psychology, art, design, and ultimately engineering of both larger than human structures, and computer graphics.

At the tactical level, the book is clearly a superior collection of critical information and easily a required text for those who would design for the human eye. At this level I would have liked to see more depictions of both buildings and environments, and more depictions of computer screens.

The absence of Library of Congress cataloging data was also a disappointment. The Library of Congress is becoming archaic, I believe publishers are amply competent to provide their own cataloging data, and this is especially important when a book crosses disciplines, e.g. cognitive science, visual intelligence, art, design, computer graphics, etcetera. Indeed, in the process of assigning cataloguing data, the publisher might discover areas where the book is weaker than intended, and send it back for enhancement.

I recommend this book be expanded to add a chapter on "decision support" and an appendix on great practitioners of the visualization of information. Although Tuft is the best known, in part because of his ceasecell promotion of his books and classes, there are at least 25 if not 50 other great visualizers, and a page on each with their photo, short bio, list of publications, and a couple of examples of their work would be a mind-enhancing "walk about" in the field of visual design.

As a textbook, this is a clear five. As adult education is falls to a four, or needs a second book that properly introduces the collective intelligence and semantic web and geospatially and time-based visualizations that are emergent.

The moral of this book is that behind every great engineering success is a trail of often ignored (but frequently spectacular) engineering failures. Petroski covers many of the best known examples of well-intentioned but ultimately failed design in action -- the galloping Tacoma Narrows Bridge (which you've probably seen tossing cars willy-nilly in the famous black-and-white footage), the collapse of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel walkways -- and many lesser known but equally informative examples. The line of reasoning Petroski develops in this book were later formalized into his quasi-Darwinian model of technological evolution in The Evolution of Useful Things, but this book is arguably the more illuminating -- and defintely the more enjoyable -- of these two titles. Highly recommended.

An Interesting Topic with Repetitive Examples

To Engineer is Human is a surprisingly relevant book, despite being 15 years old now. Some of the examples may tax the memories of younger engineers and engineering students, but that's exactly the point of this book, to emphasize the nature of engineering: improving what has already been done in the past.

I, too, found the repetitive references to a limited number of examples tiring; I suspect this was done because Petroski had prior knowledge of these case studies and wished to minimize his research by drawing on what he knew about before writing. As an amateur historian of technology, I was also disappointed that few earlier historical examples were treated in any depth, the Crystal Palace being a notable exception.

The book is an easy read. Henry Petroski's prose is easy to grasp and flows well, holding the reader's interest, despite the repetition.

Accessible even to my grandmother

In this enlightening book, Petroski, who is professor of civil engineering, has succeeded admirably in conveying what engineering is and what engineers do in a manner that is accessible even to my grandmother, i.e., the general public. His presentation, although somewhat repetitive, is clear and sprinkled judiciously with humor. Moreover, it is illustrated with familiar analogies, and also numerous mechanical and civil engineering examples including everyday objects such as paper clips, toys and knives.
To engineer is to design, `making something that has not existed before'. Petroski provides insights into the design process (which involves computers extensively nowadays) and its limitations, and also the means employed by engineers to prevent failures in their designs.
He emphasizes, however, that it is not possible to anticipate all possible ways a design can fail and thus failures inevitably occur because engineers are, after all, humans. Numerous examples of catastrophic structural failures throughout history are presented and discussed. All involved the tragic loss of lives (for instance, the collapse of two crowded suspended walkways onto the crowded floor of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency hotel in 1981) except the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows bridge in Washington State in 1940.
Petroksi also discusses the failure analysis or forensic engineering that is performed in the wake of a catastrophic design failure to understand how and why the failure occurred. He argues convincingly throughout the book that understanding such design failures can advance engineering more than successes. Design failures, like other failures in life, should be embraced, rather than denied or ignored, and learned from. Great engineers, and great people in general, are the ones who heed George Santayana's famous dictum: `Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.'

Why can't a car be built that is totally crash-proof?

The answer is well explained in this book. By the time you built such a car, it might be so heavy it couldn't move!
The real interest in this book are the analyses of various disasters that should have been planned for, but weren't.
The most terrible engineering disaster (and the reason I bought this book) was the collapse of the sky walkway in a hotel in Kansas City in the 1980's. I was just returning from KC when I heard the horrific news on the radio. The skyway collapsed during a dance, killing hundreds and injuring more in a dreadful disaster. I was very upset by this terrible event. Why did this happen?
The explanation in "To Engineer Is Human" is really brilliant; the walkway was designed "properly" with a bolt that went through the beam supporting it. But it could not be built as designed because the bolt couldn't be installed in the vertical support. Instead, the builders split the vertical support into two parts in order to install two bolts, and each part was then able to move independently, causing a shear force that eventually led to the disaster. A brilliant analysis and one that showed that despite correct design, the plan must be able to be implemented to work--or else the execution of the plan may doomed to disastrous failure.
That lesson is really important when you are engineering anything, even software. You may specify an important feature, but if the R&D department cannot implement the plan, the product may fail to meet its goals, even be defective.
The book is a bit "thin"--I wanted more and wished it were longer and had more detail, but I will say it makes its point and memorably so. After reading it, your eyes will be opened to how things are designed, how things fail and how engineering affects our lives.

Read the Bible!

This easy read, easy reference format is awesome. I've been a PowerPoint power user for eight years. This is THE BEST book on PowerPoint I have ever used. I highly recommend it.

Letdown CD

The book is quite detailed but everybody can put in a few shareware programs and templates on a CD these days. This CD is a complete letdown. I wish they remove the CD and reduce the cost of this book.

Content without Soul

This book has so much content that if you wanted to write an exam on PowerPoint, you could just remember the sentences in this book. What the book doesn't do is tell you why you would want to do things in the way Wempen explains. In a phrase, the book has no soul. It's just a compilation of what PowerPoint's menus can do in so much detail that it hurts.
