Great guide to presentations and public speaking

I have gone through phases in my career where public speaking was difficult for me and other times where it was simply something that I just did. However, it was never something that I was entirely comfortable with and I have been trying to work on that. Author Colin C. Young has written one of the best guides to public speaking that I have read with his "Why Your Presentation Sucks". Young takes a good look at stage fright and gives some wonderfully useful ideas on reducing anxiety. I also loved the structure ideas for presentations that are designed to make the audience more engaged. A must read if public speaking is in your present or your future.

This was an extremely quick read for ,e but packed with useful info. As someone who has felt stage fright during a public speaking event in the past, I really appreciated that chapter. I'd recommend this book to anyone who had to or desired to become a good public speaker. Young hits it out of the park with this handy little guide.

Beginner's guide to public speaking

This is a beginner's guide book for low level presentations. It's would be easy for high school students to understand and help them through a class presentation. The book is a secondary source of information on presentation skills. It goes over basic concepts and a couple ideas on how to handle speaking in public. The concepts can be extrapolated and applied to more intensive presentations on a case by case basis. Skilled public speakers may find a useful borrowed quote from this book.

The writing in simple, so I can only assume it's meant for a younger or inexperienced audience. Peppered through the first half of the book is a phrase similar to, "this book with teach you .........". I would like to discover something not be told that I'm going to find something.

Overall this book could help an individual new to group communication.

Americans produce the most waste of any people on Earth, says Rogers, but few of us ever think about where all that trash goes. Rogers endeavors to show the inner workings of the waste stream, from the garbage truck to the landfill, incinerator or parts unknown. She points out that recycling, once touted as an environmental lifesaver, "has serious flaws," and has done little to mitigate garbage's long history of environmental damage. Rogers also includes chapters on the history of waste removal and disposal, highlighting early sanitation efforts in New York City, as well as the multi-billion-dollar, multinational business of garbage. Consistently engaging, the book delineates the myriad problems caused by the country's waste output, but offers very few concrete examples of what readers can do to improve the garbage situation; instead, Rogers stoically acknowledges that "while consumers making choices with the environment in mind is a good thing, it is in no way a real solution to our trash woes." Environmentalists, read this book!

When I purchased this book, I thought it might add to my store of trivia knowlege, sort of a fun little look at something most of us never think about. I expected to describe it with words like "nifty." This book was not what I expected, and I'm glad.

This book was an engrossing discussion of how the nature and quantity of consumer garbage (as opposed to industrial waste) has changed. Beginning with the Industrial Revolution and moving up through today, this book considers the ways in which government policy and the corporate profit motive create a socity in which garbage - lots and lots of garbage - is inevitable, and why even the best-intentioned efforts at recycling barely make a dent in the mountain of trash.

I have a professional background in economics, and so I got a great deal out of some of Rogers' arguements that were based in economic theory. However, her simple, straightforward style makes it easy for anyone to follow her reasoning.

The subtitle, The Hidden Life of Garbage, was misleading. Perhaps a better subtitle might have been The History and Social Implications of Garbage. Although that sounds a bit scholarly, this book, while extremely well researched, did not read at all like a textbook. Rather it was an approachable discussion of why garbage occurs and why the current solutions are not working.

A must-read for anyone who cares about planet Earth, whether they are chaining themselves to trees or just recycling their soda can!

Encompassing and honest

This book is honest and what I mean by that is that it looks at the impacts of waste and concepts to remove it. Some might suggest that recycling works but that is not always the case because if the industry does not purchase recycled products then it just creates a sub industry. There are not that many books that will admit that a given product can only be recycled a given number of times (plastics are referenced in it).

The book could use a bit more updating because it does not mention other aspects but that might simply be due to size constraints. For example when it references ewaste it does not fully explain that some major retailers offer recycling. Infact with given commodity prices some might actually pay people to take it away. The book does drop the ball a bit on RoHS. The RoHS concept of course attempts to eliminate lead from electronics but this is controversial as the replacements for it do not always conduct power the same way. This has resulted in the so called "red ring of death" with Microsoft Xbox 2 as well as created higher prices which some might argue are a form of class warfare.

It does note that solutions for problems create their own problems. Horses as a means of transit meant animal wastes all over the place. Cars replaced that with their own wastes. Likewise we should be careful that we do not have future issues. Incandescant light bulbs are horrid in terms of power consumption as most of the output is not in light but as heat. LED's produce much less heat and last longer but if it is used as a traffic light during the winter it can be rendered useless.

This book is easy to read, flows very well and clearly outlines its' content and case-by-case accounts. . Excellent resource for any student studying the impact garbage has on our environment - it was required reading for an Environmental Science college class and it would definitely meet the needs of most similar class curriculum's (i.e. Sustainability etc). It's also a personal eye-opener for anyone wondering where our trash goes and how corporations should take responsibility regarding their 'trash'. As human populations explode, one day there will be be more billions of tons of trash with no place to put it and the very real problem of disposing of such (especially non-biodegradable items) will be an epidemic concern. You owe it to yourself to read this book.

About the Author
Aldia A. Rakova, a Russian language instructor, linguist, and translator at the University of Iowa, has taught the language at all levels from elementary to advanced linguistic courses. She is also project coordinator for translation projects, terminologist (English―Russian medical database), and translator of Russian and Polish at the University of Iowa Translation Laboratory. She has published numerous articles on Slavic linguistics, teaching methodology, and the cultural aspects of translation.

Ray Parrott has taught Russian language and literature classes at the Universities of Iowa and Michigan for many years and currently holds the rank of Professor and Chair, Department of Russian, at the University of Iowa. He has authored, edited, and translated numerous books and articles on literary and pedagogical issues, in addition to serving actively in his field’s major professional associations. For the past decade he has edited the AATSEEL Newsletter for the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages, a major forum for language instructors.

some glaring issues, but otherwise ok

I bought this book after purchasing the truly stellar "Schaum's Outline of Russian Grammar" expecting this to be of the same quality. The book *is* useful and *does* have a lot of information packed in there, and the organizational structure does have some good ideas that make the exercises (which are good) hang together well. I have two main problems with the book beyond this. First, you are absolutely sand blasted with vocab. This may be good or bad, depending on your point of view, but I found it to mostly be bad, because it wasn't designed with absorption/acquisition in mind. I think this would be a great review or refresher for someone who was already very advanced with both grammar and vocabulary. Not so much for somebody trying to build up to that point.

The bigger problem is that unlike the Grammar Outline, or basically any other Russian course on the market, the vocabulary is presented without any accent marks. I can't imagine why they did this, since a word's stress is so critical to developing proper Russian pronunciation (much more so than for say, English or Spanish). Especially since stress shifts in case endings or verb conjugations can lead to hilarious or tragic misunderstandings or no understanding at all, this decision just doesn't make any sense to me.

Definitely recommendable

I agree with some of the other reviewers that this book requires a pretty solid knowledge of Russian grammar and vocabulary - but this is exactly why I like it. As an advanced learner, it seems to be more difficult to find learning material that is demanding enough to take you further. Especially when you've been dealing with newspaper articles and written language most of the time and didn't have enough exposure to the vocabulary used in everyday situations. The authors do a very good job of presenting various ways of using the new vocab (i.e. three different sentences with a slightly different way of using a word/expression); there are a lot of exercises, and there is the necessary repetition and reoccurrence of learned vocab that helps it stick.

A good idea gone bad! Forget it!

Schaum's "Russian Vocabulary." This is supposed to a text in vocabulary building for everyday situations. However, the authors/publisher really missed the proverbial boat: There are no accent marks for any of the words in this book! The book title should be "We'll Show You What the Words Look Like in Print, But We Won't Tell You How to Pronounce Them Correctly." Any student of Russian knows how unpredictable the stress of Russian words is. It's really a rather nasty little joke to sell you a vocabulary book without the accent marks. You would have to look each word up in a dictionary to find out how to say it -- an impossible task. Ironically, accent marks are included in Schaum's Russian Grammar book. In short, this book is totally useless for learning new vocabulary unless you want to risk putting the accent on the wrong syllable (and perhaps totally changing the meaning of the word). What were they thinking!

About the Author
David Lawrence and Arlene Solomon together run a training program in the management of consumer lending for major financial institutions domestically and worldwide.

David has over thirty years' experience in the consumer lending business. Over nine of these years were at Citicorp, where he was the Senior Credit Officer of the consumer banking group and later its representative on the Credit Policy Committee. David created the bank's first training program for senior management on the consumer credit process.

He is the author of both the 1984 Citicorp publication Risk and Reward -- the Craft of Consumer Lending and the 1992 Prentice Hall publication, The Handbook of Consumer Lending, a leading work on the management and control of the high volume consumer lending business. He was also Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Consumer Lending.

Prior to joining Citicorp, David was with Ford Motor Company for 21 years. There, he held a variety of positions which included launching and managing credit businesses in Australia, the Philippines, Japan, and Taiwan.

Arlene has extensive experience in consulting for a wide range of businesses.

In addition to general consulting in organization and training issues, Arlene's company designs and develops training and general communications programs. The work frequently involves collaboration with senior subject matter experts in complex areas, thus blending content and training expertise.

Arlene's firm has been involved in developing training courses for senior managers in planning and implementing principles of credit, marketing, advertising, and data processing. Her firm also develops courses in product knowledge, sales and general management.

Good primer for analysts looking for more domain knowledge

Managing a Consumer Lending Business by David Lawrence and Arlene Solomon is a good primer I recommend for the readers of S4SAS.com and analysts working in the areas of consumer lending in general.

This book covers the fundamental principles of lending along with the practices at various product life cycles. While conducting SAS training, I observed that lot analysts do not know why managers look for some information and why they insist on certain format the information to be presented. After reading this book, the reader will have a background to understand the business requirements better and will be familiar with necessary lending related terminologies.

I found the following topics covered in the book useful for an analyst.

1. Overview to the consumer lending process and products.

2. Acquisition and direct mailing - segmentation, prescreen processes and practices.

3. The use of credit scoring, score monitoring and reporting process.

4. Portfolio Management and utilization of behavioral scores, strategy tracking.

Best in its Class

Managing a Consumer Lending Business is an excellent primer covering both fundamental practices and principles for safe and sound lending. This book covers the basics well and should be required reading for management trainees and those new to consumer lending. This 2002-published book is superior to older, now-obsolete books on consumer lending, and is spiced with anecdotes, quotes and references to mistakes that made headlines. The chapter on recessions is germaine and usually neglected by other books. The only criticisms are minor: a few too many references to the authors' consulting practice, and it would be improved by a chapter or two on securitization and the gain-on-sale practices.

This book is very well written. It is about managing a healthy consumer lending business by using systematic ways to plan, acquire, and maintain a portfolio and by emphasizing quantitative tools to measure its performance and manage risks. I like this book also because it provides careful accounts about the history of this industry.
This book is an excellent reference for serious practitioners. Portfolio managers and financial analysts can acquire important concepts for managing their businesses. You might even be able to start your own consumer lending business by following the steps introduced in the book. Meanwhile, this is an attractive book for consumers to equip with extensive knowledge to deal with credit card issuers, collection companies and to take care of their mortgages and automobile loans, etc.

Prerequisites for reading the book are the following. The reader is assumed to know elementary analysis as the subject is set forth, for example, in TOM M. ApOSTOL'S Mathematical Analysis [Addison-Wesley Publ. Co., Reading, Mass., 1957], or WALTER RUDIN'S Principles of M athe- nd matical Analysis [2 Ed., McGraw-Hill Book Co., New York, 1964].

"Families Coping with Mental Illness-Stories from the US and Japan" by Yuko Kawanishi has something important to say to three kinds of readers.
