About the Author
Jiu-Hwa Upshur received her B.A. at the University of Sydney in Australia and Ph.D. in history at the University of Michigan. She is the author of two catalogs on Chinese art and many articles on Chinese history and has lived and traveled extensively in China, Taiwan, and other parts of Asia. She is co-author of THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A BRIEF GLOBAL HISTORY (5th edition, 1994) and co-editor of LIVES AND TIMES: READINGS IN WORLD HISTORY (1994). Since 1993 she has been a member of the world history committee of the College Board.

Janice J. Terry is a graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She is the author of THE WAFD, 1919-1952: CORNERSTONE OF EGYPTIAN POLITICAL POWER, MISTAKEN IDENTITY: ARAB STEREOTYPES IN POPULAR WRITING, and numerous articles on contemporary events in western Asia. Dr. Terry has lived and traveled extensively throughout western Asia and Africa. She is co-author of THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A BRIEF GLOBAL HISTORY (5th ed., 1994). In 1990, she received an award for excellence in teaching from the state of Michigan.

James P. Holoka received his B.A. from the University of Rochester, his M.A. from SUNY, Binghamton, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, where he was a Rackham Prize Fellow. He has taught Greek and Latin, classical humanities, and ancient history since 1974; he received a teaching excellence award in 1980 and a scholarly recognition award in 1991. He is a published translator and the author of three textbooks and over sixty scholarly articles and reviews in such journals as American Historical Review, Classical World, Classical and Modern Literature, and Transactions of the American Philological Association.

George H. Cassar received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of New Brunswick and his Ph.D. from McGill University. He is presently Professor of History at Eastern Michigan University, where he has taught European and military history since 1968. His output is extensive and includes half a dozen books on various aspects of the First World War as well as co-authorship of A SURVEY OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION (1987). In 1985 he received the prestigious Faculty Award for Research and Publication from Eastern Michigan University. He is currently working on a book related to British strategy during the Great War.

Richard D. Goff received his A.B. from Duke University, his M.A. from Cornell University, and his Ph.D. from Duke University. He has taught courses in western civilization and specializes in teaching twentieth-century world history. He is the author of CONFEDERATE SUPPLY and encyclopedia articles on southern history and culture. In 1983 he received a distinguished faculty service award. He is co-author of THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A BRIEF GLOBAL HISTORY (5th ed., 1994).

Originally bought this book for history class, but it's an interesting read by itself. One of the few history books I've seen that genuinely tries to stay impartial and tell it like it is (or was, rather).

The Strategy Desk Reference Book

This Second Edition of The Strategy Book, continues the great work of the first presenting tremendously useful frameworks in an understandable and concise way. The examples from the real world have been strengthened but aren't long winded. Out of many strategy books I read during my MBA I found the toolbox section of this book the most useful. I've used it at work and actually ended up giving my copy of the old edition to a coworker who really found it helpful. I'd highly recommend this book not just to MBA students, but to those in business who want to rethink how they approach their strategies.

This book is not meant to be an all encompassing textbook on strategy. It is meant to be a good high level introduction and handy desk reference guide for those who have studied this material elsewhere. For those who want to dive deeper into any of he topics the references are quite handy. For the price, you really get a lot of strategic bang for your buck.

Renee Jain is an award-winning entrepreneur, speaker, and certified life coach. Renee is also one of less than 300 people in the world to earn her Masters in Applied Positive Psychology - the scientific study of optimal human functioning - from the University of Pennsylvania. How to teach kids to shift their focus from what does not work to what works, using the science of positive psychology

Positive Psychology, the study of what leads to a flourishing life, grew spectacularly in the past few years.
However, many authors either misrepresent Positive Psychology findings or they formulate them in technical terms.
Not Renee Jain.
The author of "what's right with this picture" was able to write a highly readable book useful to anyone ages 8 and up, while staying true to the science.

The reader can find in this book the following:
- an introduction to character strengths. Peterson and Seligman, pioneers of positive psychology, put forth a classification of 6 virtues and 24 character strengths. They meant their classification to be an anti-DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental disorders). Just like the DSM was essentially a classification of what prevents humans from thriving, their 24 character strengths were a classification of what allows human beings to flourish.
- 8 well-written stories that illustrates character strengths in actions. The protagonists are kids and the settings and themes are mostly school-related. Each story ends with prompts for reflection and an explanations of the strengths highlighted in the story.
- a series of activities to help kids engage with their strengths: from strength-spotting to strength-missions.
- then, my favorite part. A reference section. It is so rare to see a self-help (educational) book for the general public with academic references that I almost cried :)

Recommended to anyone who wants to get a basic understanding of character strengths, one of the key concepts of positive psychology.

What's Right? This book!

Explore realistic scenarios with the Go Strengths! characters in book form with this practical addition to the online animated happiness and resilience program. Recommended for educators, parents or practitioners working with older elementary kids and above. Easy to follow workbook materials designed for adults and realistic stories for kids. Resources for learning more about strengths and research are included in the introductory and afterward portions (the adult stuff) with the engaging stories and strengths missions in between (the kid stuff). Don't miss bonus materials and answers to activities.

Empowering kids to develop strength of character

This book makes you think about "negativity bias", a concept explained by the author as one where we humans are hard-wired to respond to negative events more so than positive ones. An unfortunate consequence of this tendency is the impact on our children.

It can be a struggle for children and young adults to find their own inner strengths and make good choices, especially when confronted with peer pressure, in-your-face social media and the need for social validation. This book is a step in the direction of "what's right".

The author uses engaging vignettes to illustrate the character traits we would like to foster in our children. The activities and "missions" suggested by the author are also excellent for developing and applying the core positive strengths.

If this book is to be put to its best use, it would be as a read-aloud with your child. Use it as a talking point to identify desirable actions and consequences.

Can a child use the material on his or her own? Perhaps. A young middle-grader can certainly understand the material, but the value in this book is the positive dialogue that it invites between parent and child or teacher and student.

Highly recommend.
