And now for something completely different...an effective way to teach kindergarteners how to read multi-syllabic words

I was skeptical when our teacher Ron Scott told me about the reading program he developed; skeptical, because it didn’t seem possible or plausible to have a kindergarten student progress from not even knowing the alphabet to reading multi-syllable words in such a short amount of time. Particularly when the school district goal for kindergarteners is to learn one letter a week as a goal for the year.
Then I got an opportunity to watch the process and see how the kindergarteners would progress every few weeks. The local Boys & Girls Club allowed us to try the system on their kindergarteners for 45 minutes each day. (The school district had no interest in a pilot study.) We filmed the students taking their first baseline test showing them at various stages of learning the alphabet in October 2014.
Six months later, in April 2015, it is amazing to see the results of the P.R.A. program. The methodology is just so different than anything I had ever witnessed. When most teachers see it, they have an "A-ha!" moment when they realize it is a very different approach to reading than anything we have seen before, but it makes total sense. Very quickly, using "Magic Charts," the kids start to attack words with word parts, not single letters. That’s how they become so adept at reading longer and longer words. You need no materials other than the book, from which you can make enlarged posters of the letter groups or draw them on the board. The book contains simple instructions, a few charts, and a ton of single words and sentences for the students to perfect their reading. Teacher training is minimum as teachers "get" the concept quickly.

I have to admit it's kind of fun to hear a 5yo say "diabolical." Then get the book and understand this simple methodology to see why it works. It truly is an amazing system to teach a kindergartener how to read. Highly, highly recommended for anyone looking for a successful way to teach early literacy, or wanting a proven program to be able to secure grant funding for teacher time and books to teach it. It works.
Any drawbacks? Just one. The adults who said we were "pushing" kids by "making" them read "before they were ready." Watch the excited, engaged kids on the video and you be the judge. PRA raises the bar and kids respond in kind.

I was very impressed with the results of my kindergartner ...

I was very impressed with the results of my kindergartner knowing how to read words. However the book does not cover reading comprehension. the students are reading the words but they do not understand the meaning of them. I struggled as a child learning to read. I think that there needs to be some sort of comprehension skills combined with the program to ensure that the children are not only reading the words but understanding their meanings.

My daughter is a kindergartener and will enter first grade this August. This kindergarten provides Pinnacle Reading Advantage along its curriculum.
I found this book is very helpful to help reading multi-syllable words. My daughter came here two years ago (we are Asian). Now she is one of the best reader in her class. I asked my daughter how she thinks about this book. She told me she likes this book. Now it's easier for her to sound out many words including multi-syllable words. I read books for her almost every night from last year. After she gets hang of reading after learning the Pinnacle Reading Advantage book, she does not need my helps that much and now she reads books for me every night! We love this book!
